REXGEN and REXDESK: frequently asked questions

Updated

Find quick answers about REXGEN data loggers and the REXDESK software, with a link to the guide that goes deeper on each one.

Answers that apply to every REXGEN logger come first, then the questions for each model and for REXDESK. If your question is not here, contact technical support.

All REXGEN loggers

What happens when the logger storage is full?

By default the logger keeps recording and deletes the oldest file first (FIFO). You can set it to stop logging instead when the storage is full. REXDESK can format the logger to clear it. For the storage settings, see REXDESK: record CAN, CAN FD and LIN.

Can I see live data, and how do I get physical values?

Yes. With the logger connected over USB, REXDESK shows a live CAN trace, and it decodes signals live when you link a DBC file. The logger records raw frames. To get physical values from a log, export it with a DBC file, for example to CSV or MDF4. See REXDESK: download and export your logs.

Can I use a REXGEN with a K-BOX?

Yes. The REXGEN logger records the K-BOX data like any other CAN traffic, but it cannot power the module. REXGEN 1, REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS have no auxiliary power output. The low-current sensor supply on REXGEN Air is not enough for a K-BOX. Power the K-BOX from an external 6 to 36 V supply. See K-Series: connecting and powering modules.

Can a REXGEN work as a J2534 pass-thru interface?

Yes. REXGEN 1, REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS work as J2534 pass-thru CAN interfaces over USB. They stream CAN in real time to diagnostic tools and applications such as SavvyCAN. See these guides.

REXGEN 1

Where can I find the REXGEN 1 pinout?

See REXGEN 1: pinouts, LED and installation. REXGEN 1 connects through a 9-way D-Sub.

What is the current consumption of REXGEN 1?

REXGEN 1 current consumption at 12 V
State Current
Logging 87 mA
Sleep Under 17 mA
Deep sleep Under 2 mA

For the full power data, see REXGEN 1: overview and specifications.

REXGEN 2

Where can I find the REXGEN 2 pinout?

See REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS: pinouts, LEDs and installation. REXDESK also shows the pinout under its Help section.

What is the current consumption of REXGEN 2?

REXGEN 2 current consumption at 12 V
State Current
Logging Under 75 mA
Sleep Under 17 mA
Deep sleep Under 2 mA

For the full power data and the sleep settings, see these guides.

REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS

Where can I find the REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS pinout?

REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS shares its pinout guide with REXGEN 2. See REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS: pinouts, LEDs and installation. REXDESK also shows it under its Help section.

What is the current consumption of REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS?

REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS current consumption at 12 V
State Current
Logging Under 80 mA
Sleep Under 25 mA
Deep sleep Under 2 mA

What is the GNSS accuracy?

2.0 m CEP. See REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS: recording motion and position.

Do the LEDs show the GNSS status?

No. Wait at least two minutes after power-up before you start a test. The receiver needs a fix from at least four satellites to produce good position data.

Does it support formats other than DBC?

Yes. REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS records CAN and LIN. It takes LDF files for LIN as well as DBC files for CAN. REXGEN 2 does the same. See REXGEN 2: recording CAN FD, LIN and sensor inputs.

Are connectors other than the 9-way D-Sub available?

REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS come with a 9-way D-Sub as standard. Influx Technology can supply a Deutsch connector or free-wired leads for volume orders on request. To discuss a custom configuration, contact us.

REXGEN Air

Where can I find the REXGEN Air pinout?

See REXGEN Air: pinouts, harnesses, LEDs and installation.

What is the current consumption of REXGEN Air?

REXGEN Air current consumption at 12 V
State Current
Logging, without cloud upload Under 120 mA
Logging, with cloud upload Under 300 mA
Sleep Under 21 mA
Deep sleep Under 10 mA

See REXGEN Air: technical specifications.

Can I have four CAN FD channels?

Yes. REXGEN Air comes with two or four CAN or CAN FD channels, plus a LIN bus. See REXGEN Air: technical specifications.

Is a SIM card supplied?

No. REXGEN Air takes a standard SIM, which you supply, behind the front face. Most standard SIMs are suitable. If in doubt, ask technical support. See REXGEN Air quick start guide.

Why is my REXGEN Air not uploading to the FTPS server?

  1. Check that the SIM card is active and has enough data.
  2. Check that the LTE antenna is connected to the logger.
  3. Check the server and APN settings in the logger configuration.

For the settings, see REXGEN Air: uploading logs to an FTPS server. To find where the connection stops, see REXGEN: check the LTE connection with the debug tool.

REXDESK

Where can I download REXDESK and the other software?

See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware. The REXDESK page describes what the software does.

REXDESK does not detect my logger. Where is the driver?

Install the REXGEN USB driver. Its installer is in the Influx Technology folder in the Windows Start menu. See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.

Why does REXDESK not open after installation?

REXDESK needs the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and the .NET runtime. The REXDESK installer includes both. If REXDESK does not open, check that the Visual C++ Redistributable is installed, or run the REXDESK installer again. See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.

What are the main features of REXDESK?

Live CAN trace, message filters, start and stop triggers, sleep modes and DBC support. For a tour, see REXDESK: the window, menus and panels.

Which data formats can REXDESK export?

ASAM MDF4, CSV, MATLAB (.mat), ASC, BLF and Peak TRC. CSV export can decode signals with a DBC file, and J1939 DBC files support PGN-based exports. See REXDESK: download and export your logs.

Why does my exported CSV data have gaps?

By default REXDESK exports each signal timestamped as it arrived on the bus. CAN messages arrive at different rates. Each row holds values only for the messages received at that moment, which leaves gaps. Resampling on export to CSV or MAT fills them. Resampling is optional and off by default. See REXDESK: download and export your logs.
