Recommended product

REXGEN 2 with IMU: CAN, motion and position on one device

Rolling-stock data programmes combine CAN diagnostic and fault evidence with vehicle motion and position context. REXGEN 2 in its IMU configuration captures all three on one logger and one time base, in a rugged IP65-sealed enclosure rated -40C to +85C.

Diagnostics plus motion on one timeline

2x CAN FD at up to 8 Mbit/s plus integrated 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS. Capture rolling stock CAN diagnostics and ride quality acceleration on the same trace, time-aligned to one clock.

Event capture around faults and impacts

Pre and post-event recording with configurable triggers. Useful for incident investigation, brake event analysis and component fault root-cause work.

Built for extended deployment

IP65 sealed, -40C to +85C operating range. Non-removable eMMC up to 16 GB eliminates the SD card vibration failures common across long rolling-stock duty cycles.

Pairs with K-TC for thermal monitoring

Add K-TC thermocouple modules for traction motor, brake assembly and HVAC system temperature monitoring during rail vehicle durability programmes. Up to 32 channels with plus or minus 1C accuracy and CAN bus isolation rated to 780V.

The challenge

What makes rail data acquisition difficult

Rolling stock data programmes have measurement demands that span fault diagnostics, ride quality and condition monitoring on the same asset.

Two data streams, one timeline

Engineering teams need CAN diagnostics and ride quality acceleration on the same time base. Running separate loggers creates synchronisation problems and doubles the install footprint on the carriage.

Rolling stock duty cycles run for years

Loggers installed on carriages stay in service for years between maintenance windows. Power-safe writes, vibration resistance, OTA configuration and remote firmware updates are not optional.

Thermal monitoring on long-duration deployments

Traction motor, brake assembly and HVAC thermal monitoring runs continuously across rolling-stock duty cycles. Thermocouple modules need CAN-output integration with the vehicle logger and isolation suitable for the electrical environment on locomotives, trams and light rail vehicles.

What engineers say

Trusted by engineering teams

By installing the REXGEN we were able to log simultaneously the vibrations of the ship with the internal accelerometer and the CAN bus. By connecting the datalogger to our diagnostic computer and leveraging the open REXLIBRARY of Influx Technology, we were able to make a custom diagnostic tool that automatically finds the diagnostic fault messages on the CAN bus and correlates it with the accelerometer data. Furthermore the data is exported to a time related database and visualized for easy interpretation by our engineers and the customer.

Frequently asked questions

Rail and transit data logging

What makes REXGEN 2 the right device for rolling-stock event evidence?

REXGEN 2 in its IMU configuration combines 2x CAN FD logging at up to 8 Mbit/s, a 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS in one rugged device. Rolling-stock CAN diagnostics, vehicle motion and position log to the same trace, time-aligned to one clock. Pre and post-event capture handles fault and impact investigation across mainline, metro and tram applications.

Does REXGEN 2 include an IMU and GNSS as standard?

REXGEN 2 is available in two configurations on one product page: the base CAN FD logger and the IMU build with integrated 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS. For rolling-stock event evidence with motion and position context, the IMU build is the recommended configuration. For diagnostic-only deployments the base configuration is available at a lower price point.

How do I monitor brake disc, traction motor or HVAC temperatures on rolling stock?

The K-TC module is a CAN-output K-type thermocouple system for high-temperature monitoring on rolling stock. Up to 32 channels with plus or minus 1C accuracy, supporting K, J and T thermocouple types. CAN bus isolation rated to 780V. K-TC outputs CAN messages that REXGEN 2 records alongside the CAN diagnostic bus, 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS data on the same time base. Common rail deployments cover brake disc, traction motor, gearbox and HVAC system temperatures.

What protocols do REXGEN loggers support on rolling stock?

REXGEN loggers support CAN, CAN FD, LIN and ISO 11783 networks. Rolling stock applications typically rely on CAN-based vehicle networks which all REXGEN devices handle natively, with PGN, signal and ID-level filtering configurable in REXDESK. CAN FD support at up to 8 Mbit/s covers next-generation rolling-stock TCMS networks.

How long can a REXGEN logger run unattended on rolling stock?

REXGEN loggers support WakeOnCAN, WakeOnMovement and WakeOnDigitalInputs for unattended deployment on rolling stock that cycles in and out of service. Non-removable eMMC up to 32 GB on REXGEN Air supports extended logging windows between cloud uploads. Power-safe writes mean zero message loss on bad shutdowns.

Can configuration be updated remotely across a fleet of rolling stock?

Yes. REXGEN Air supports over-the-air configuration and firmware updates via LTE CAT 1 or CAT 4. This is particularly valuable for rolling-stock fleets where physical access to loggers requires depot time. The full fleet inventory, upload schedule and firmware version can be managed from one cloud platform.
