Black-box CAN data logging for mining haul trucks and heavy equipment

Black-box event evidence on heavy mining equipment, with motion and position context as standard. Built around REXGEN 2 in its IMU configuration, combining CAN FD logging, a 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS in one rugged device built for haul roads, open-pit operations and underground deployment.

Recommended product

REXGEN 2 with IMU: motion, position and CAN evidence in one device

Mining haul trucks need more than a CAN recorder. They need the loaded leg, the dump, the empty return and the brake events on the same timeline as engine and transmission data. REXGEN 2 in its IMU configuration is built for that job: 2x CAN FD logging combined with a 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS in one rugged enclosure.

Motion plus CAN on one device

6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS integrated alongside 2x CAN FD at up to 8 Mbit/s. Haul cycle, brake events and impacts log alongside engine and transmission CAN traffic on the same trace.

Event capture around DM1 faults

Pre and post-event recording with configurable triggers. Capture context around J1939 DM1 fault codes, brake events, impact thresholds or operator-initiated markers.

Survives the haul road

IP65 sealed, -40C to +85C operating range. Non-removable eMMC up to 16 GB eliminates the SD card vibration failures that plague heavy equipment deployments.

Unattended operation

WakeOnMovement, WakeOnCAN and WakeOnDigitalInputs for deployment on equipment an engineer rarely accesses. Power-safe writes mean zero message loss on bad shutdowns.

The challenge

What makes mining data acquisition difficult

Mining vehicles operate in some of the harshest conditions for electronic measurement equipment.

Black-box evidence, not just a CAN log

Warranty claims and incident investigations on heavy equipment depend on understanding what the machine was doing, where it was and what happened in the seconds before the event. CAN traffic alone misses half the story.

Extreme vibration and temperature

Haul trucks, loaders and drilling equipment generate sustained vibration that destroys SD cards and loosens connections. Ambient temperatures range from below -40C on surface to above +60C deep underground.

Hazardous access and maintenance windows

Physical access to mining equipment is restricted by safety protocols and operational schedules. Equipment that needs manual data retrieval or on-vehicle configuration creates costly downtime.

What engineers say

Trusted by engineering teams

We have used several suits of REBEL LT with K-BOX together for several years to obtain CCP, CAN messages and sensor data including pressure and temperature measurements. The whole system is very robust and stable for getting what we need by such a cost-effective system. Now we could hardly take the system off the vehicle as we could not do the vehicle test without it.

Research Laboratory

Testing Technical Manager

The REBEL LT device is very easy to use and is dependable. I have used it for the last four years, and its performance has been consistent. Flawless and sturdy.

Frequently asked questions

Mining data logging

What makes REXGEN 2 the right device for haul truck black-box logging?

REXGEN 2 in its IMU configuration combines 2x CAN FD logging at up to 8 Mbit/s, a 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS in one rugged device. The haul cycle (loaded leg, dump, empty return) and the engine and transmission CAN traffic log to the same trace, with pre and post-event capture around J1939 DM1 faults or impact thresholds. One device covers what would otherwise need separate motion and CAN data loggers.

Does REXGEN 2 include an IMU and GNSS as standard?

REXGEN 2 is available in two configurations on one product page: the base CAN FD logger and the IMU build with integrated 6-axis IMU and 18 Hz GNSS. For mining haul-cycle and event evidence work, the IMU build is the recommended configuration. For diagnostic-only deployments without motion or position requirements, the base configuration is available at a lower price point.

What environmental ratings do the REXGEN loggers have for mining use?

REXGEN 1, REXGEN 2 and REXGEN Air are rated IP65 (dust-tight and protected against water jets) and operate from -40C to +85C. The non-removable eMMC storage eliminates the SD card vibration failures common in heavy equipment deployments. Power-safe writes mean zero message loss on bad shutdowns.

How do REXGEN loggers operate in underground mines without cellular connectivity?

REXGEN 1 and REXGEN 2 log to non-removable eMMC for retrieval at the surface or on a maintenance cycle. Where cloud upload is required, REXGEN Air buffers J1939 and CAN data on eMMC and uploads automatically via FTP, FTPS, S3 or HTTPS when the vehicle surfaces or reaches a WiFi access point. GNSS dead reckoning keeps the position trace continuous through underground operations.

Can I monitor J1939 DM1 diagnostic trouble codes on heavy mining equipment?

Yes. All REXGEN loggers support J1939 DM1 fault monitoring with configurable triggers. DM1 counter triggers can start recording around fault events for investigation. REXGEN Air adds a snapshot service that periodically sends decoded J1939 signals to your server for trend monitoring across the fleet.

How do I monitor engine bay, brake and exhaust temperatures on a mining vehicle?

The K-TC module is a CAN-output K-type thermocouple system designed for high-temperature monitoring on mining equipment. Up to 32 thermocouple channels with plus or minus 1C accuracy and isolation rated to 780V on the CAN bus. K-TC outputs CAN messages that REXGEN loggers record alongside vehicle CAN traffic. Common deployments cover engine bay, exhaust manifold, brake pad and transmission temperatures.
