REXDESK: sleep and wake settings
Set when a REXGEN logger goes to sleep, how deeply it sleeps and what wakes it again. The logger can then stay fitted to a parked vehicle without draining the battery.
Open the sleep settings
A REXGEN logger goes to sleep when CAN 0 and CAN 1 have both been quiet for the time you set. While it sleeps it draws a fraction of its logging current and records nothing.
- Open the configuration. Load or build the configuration for the logger in REXDESK.
- Open the sleep settings. In the Device Configuration panel, select Sleep.
-
Choose a sleep mode. Select No Sleep, Deep Sleep or Normal Sleep in the Sleep mode list.

The Sleep mode list. The wake options below it change with the mode you choose. - Set the delay. In Sleep after no CAN activity for (minutes), enter how long both CAN buses must be quiet before the logger sleeps.
- Choose the wake sources. Tick the wake options you need. They are described below.
- Send the configuration. Select Run to write the configuration to the logger.
Choose a sleep mode
- No Sleep
- The logger does not use the sleep and wake function at all.
- Deep Sleep
- The lowest current. The logger always wakes on activity on CAN 0 or CAN 1, so the CAN and alarm boxes are greyed out. You can add Wake Up On Movement on loggers that support it. Connecting USB does not wake it.
- Normal Sleep
- A higher current than Deep Sleep, with more ways to wake. The logger always wakes when you connect USB. It also wakes on each source you tick: CAN 0, CAN 1, the alarm or movement.
| Wake source | Deep Sleep | Normal Sleep |
|---|---|---|
| USB connected | No | Yes |
| Activity on CAN 0 | Yes, always | When ticked |
| Activity on CAN 1 | Yes, always | When ticked |
| Alarm | No | When ticked |
| Movement | When ticked | When ticked |
Wake options in Normal Sleep

Wake on CAN
- Wake Up On CAN 0
- The logger wakes when there is traffic on the CAN 0 bus.
- Wake Up On CAN 1
- The logger wakes when there is traffic on the CAN 1 bus.
Tick both to wake on either bus.
Wake on alarm
Tick Wake Up On Alarm to wake the logger by its own clock, then choose one of three timings:
- Wake up once
- Wakes once, on the date and at the time you set in Alarm Date and Time.
- Wake up every day
- Wakes at the same time every day.
- Wake up minutes after sleep
- Wakes the number of minutes you enter after it goes to sleep.

Wake on movement
Tick Wake Up On Movement to wake the logger as soon as its motion sensor detects movement. It needs a logger with a built-in IMU. See the table below.

Current and wake sources by logger
The figures are the published figures for each logger. Use Deep Sleep when a logger stays on a vehicle battery for days.
| Logger | Logging | Normal Sleep | Deep Sleep | Wakes on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| REXGEN 1 | 87 mA | Under 17 mA | Under 2 mA | CAN |
| REXGEN 2 | Under 75 mA | Under 17 mA | Under 2 mA | CAN |
| REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS | Under 80 mA | Under 25 mA | Under 2 mA | CAN, movement |
| REXGEN Air | Under 120 mA, under 300 mA while uploading | Under 21 mA | Under 10 mA | CAN, movement |
| REXGEN Pro | Under 200 mA | Under 15 mA | Not published | CAN, movement, digital input |
The table lists the wake sources published on the product pages. The alarm is not among them, but REXDESK offers it in the sleep settings.
REXGEN Pro also wakes on a digital input. The REXDESK sleep settings shown here have no option for it.
Before a logger is left asleep
- The delay restarts with every CAN message on either bus, so the logger sleeps only after a full quiet period.
- On a REXGEN Air or REXGEN Pro that uploads to the cloud, tick Upload All Files Before Sleep in the upload settings. Every file then reaches the server before the logger sleeps. See REXDESK: upload logs to AWS S3, MinIO or Google Cloud Storage.
- Deep Sleep does not wake on USB. To connect a sleeping logger to REXDESK, wake it with CAN traffic first.
