REXGEN 2: recording CAN FD, LIN and sensor inputs

Updated

Find out what REXGEN 2 can record from its CAN, CAN FD and LIN buses and its four inputs. Each section links to the REXDESK guide for its settings.

How recording works

You set what REXGEN 2 records in a REXDESK configuration and send it to the logger. While the configuration is active, the logger records to its soldered eMMC. Every channel shares one clock, so bus data and input data line up in the same file. When the eMMC is full, FIFO logic overwrites the oldest file first. Log files survive a power loss or sleep without corruption.

To set up a first recording, see REXGEN 2 quick start guide. To download and convert the log files, see REXDESK: download and export your logs.

CAN and CAN FD

REXGEN 2 records two CAN or CAN FD buses, in field tests or on the bench. It supports every standard CAN and CAN FD bit rate.

  • Bit rates. Choose a standard rate, set a custom one or change the advanced bit timing.
  • Filters. Keep only the CAN IDs or SAE J1939 messages you need, filtered by source address, destination address or PGN.
  • Triggers. Start or stop logging on a CAN ID, a CAN signal value, a J1939 DM1 counter or a digital input. Pre-trigger logging keeps the run-up to an event in the file.
  • Error frames. The logger records CAN error frames on the same timeline as the data.
  • Silent mode. A configurable listen-only mode keeps the logger from acknowledging frames on the bus.
  • DBC files. Decode signals with a DBC file when you export.

For the steps, see these guides.

To record OBD-II parameters, see REXGEN: log OBD2 Mode 1 PIDs.

LIN

REXGEN 2 records one LIN bus (LIN 1.3 and 2.0, up to 20 kbaud) in field tests or on the bench. You can load an LDF file and use schedule tables. LIN shares connector A with power and CAN 0, on pin 4.

See REXDESK: record CAN, CAN FD and LIN.

Analogue and digital inputs

The inputs record signals that are not on a bus. Use them to record status information from devices, machines and sensors, such as switch and key states. They can also start or stop logging with a trigger.

REXGEN 2 inputs
Input Channels Range Sample rate
Analogue (connector B) 2, bipolar single-ended, 12-bit ±10 V, with per-channel scaling and offset Up to 1 kHz
Digital (connector A) 2, unipolar single-ended Low below 0.8 V, high above 2.5 V, up to 28 V Up to 1 kHz

For wiring examples for the digital inputs, see REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS: pinouts, LEDs and installation. For thermocouples, more analogue channels or switched outputs, add a K-Series module on the same CAN bus. See K-Series: connecting and powering modules.

See REXDESK: log analogue and digital inputs.
