Where can I download the software?
For K-CAL, K-Log and the drivers, see Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware. K-CAL is free and works with every K-Series module. The K-CAL page describes what it does.
Which drivers do I need?
It depends on how the PC connects to the module.
- K-TC connects over USB and needs its USB driver. The driver is installed with K-CAL, in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Influx Technology\Influx K-Cal\TCxxDriver. - K-BOX and K-AN8 have no PC port, so they need no driver of their own. K-CAL connects to them over CAN through a CAN interface, such as a Kvaser interface or an Influx Technology logger. Only that interface needs a driver.
See K-CAL: installing the software and CAN interface drivers.
How do I get a DBC file for a module?
Connect the module to K-CAL, configure its channels and save the settings, then select Export. K-CAL asks where to save the file and writes a DBC file for that module. For several modules, K-CAL can generate a combined DBC.
For the steps, see these guides:
Watch: How to export a CAN DBC using the K-BOX (1:28)
Can I use K-Series modules with any CAN data logger?
Yes. Every module sends standard CAN and comes with a DBC file, so REBEL, REXGEN and third-party loggers can all record and decode its data. See K-Series: logging module data with REBEL and DIALOG.
Can my logger power the modules?
A REBEL logger can power K-Series modules from its AUX/CAN1 lead once auxiliary power is enabled in its configuration. See K-Series: logging module data with REBEL and DIALOG.
A REXGEN logger cannot. REXGEN 1, REXGEN 2 and REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS have no auxiliary power output, and the low-current sensor supply on REXGEN Air is too weak for a module. Give each module on a REXGEN an external supply. See K-Series: connecting and powering modules.
Can I connect a module to the vehicle CAN bus?
We do not recommend it. A module sends its own CAN messages. On the vehicle network its identifiers could clash with those of other nodes and cause problems in the vehicle. Put the modules on a separate CAN channel of your logger instead. For termination and cable length, see CAN bus wiring: termination, cable length and grounding.
Can I connect several modules together?
Yes. K-TC, K-BOX and K-AN8 modules stack and daisy-chain on one CAN bus, using the 9-way D-Sub link cable INF4305.0. Give every module in the chain a unique CAN ID so the messages do not conflict.
For the wiring, see these guides:
Do the modules support sleep mode?
Yes, every K-Series module does. With WakeOnCAN, a module drops into deep sleep when the CAN bus goes quiet. It wakes again when activity returns. This saves power where logging is intermittent. Select the sleep mode on the General tab in K-CAL. See K-TC: configuring channels and CAN output in K-CAL.
Can the modules be calibrated and certified?
Yes. K-CAL has a built-in calibration tool. Influx Technology can also calibrate and certify a module on demand. To arrange it, contact us.
To calibrate a module yourself, see these guides:
K-TC
In which modes can I use a K-TC?
- Thermocouple data on CAN. The K-TC measures the thermocouples and transmits the data on a CAN bus for loggers and ECUs to read.
- Standalone logging. It records timestamped temperature data to its 8 GB internal storage, with no separate logger.
- Connected to a PC over USB. You configure and calibrate it, and view the data live in the K-CAL oscilloscope.
Standalone logging and CAN transmission can run at the same time.
Which software comes with the K-TC?
Two free applications. K-CAL configures the module and exports its DBC file. K-Log (formerly TC Logger) sets up and manages standalone logging. See K-TC: configuring channels and CAN output in K-CAL.
Can the K-TC log on its own, and for how long?
Yes. Set it up with K-Log and it records to its 8 GB internal storage without a PC or a logger. That is enough for months of data. See K-TC: standalone logging with K-Log.
Watch: How to configure K-TC for logging using K-Log (1:17)
Can it record to the eMMC and transmit on CAN at the same time?
Yes. The K-TC keeps a copy on its eMMC while it sends the same measurements on CAN, so you get a backup as well as live data.
How accurate is the K-TC?
±1 °C across the measurement range. A reading falls within one degree of the true temperature.
What is the resolution of the K-TC?
0.001 °C, with cold junction compensation as standard. See K-TC: overview and specifications.
Which thermocouples can I use?
Types K, J and T, on miniature connectors. A K-TC has 8, 16 or 32 channels, samples each at up to 20 Hz and measures from -200 °C to +1200 °C. Thermocouples are sold separately.
Is the K-TC isolated?
Yes. The K-TC has functional galvanic isolation between its USB port, CAN bus, power supply and thermocouple boards (see the K-TC specification). Each board carries a group of 8 channels. The groups are isolated from each other, while the 8 channels within a group are connected. This stops ground loops on the rig from reaching the measurement and keeps one group's signals from interfering with another's.
Why isolate the CAN bus and the USB port?
Isolation protects the module and the equipment connected to it. The isolation barrier stops voltage spikes, ground loops and other electrical disturbances from reaching the CAN bus, the USB port or the PC connected to it.
Where can I find the K-TC pinout?
Can pin 3 be used as power ground?
No. On the K-TC CAN connectors, pin 3 is signal ground and pin 5 is power ground. Keep to these assignments to avoid grounding problems. See K-TC: connector pinouts.
Can I power the K-TC from USB for standalone logging?
The K-TC8 and K-TC16 can run from a USB port that supplies enough power, but we do not recommend it. The K-TC32 always needs an external supply. See K-Series: connecting and powering modules.
K-BOX
Where can I find the K-BOX pinout?
Can the K-BOX log data on its own?
No. The K-BOX does not store data. To record its measurements, connect it to a CAN data logger, such as a REBEL, a REXGEN or a third-party logger. You can also view them live in K-CAL. For standalone temperature logging, use a K-TC. See K-CAL: viewing live data on the oscilloscope.
Watch: How to interface K-BOX and view live data using K-CAL (1:04)
What are the thermocouple and analogue resolution and accuracy?
| Input | Resolution | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Thermocouples (types K, J and T) | 0.1 °C | ±1 °C |
| Analogue inputs | 16 bit | ±0.0015% of full scale |
See K-BOX: overview and specifications.
Can the K-BOX measure current?
Yes, indirectly. The analogue inputs measure voltage, so use a current clamp with a voltage output, or a shunt, within the ±80 V to ±10 V switchable ranges. The K-AN8 measures current the same way. See K-BOX: configuring analogue, thermocouple and digital channels.
K-AN8
Where can I find the K-AN8 pinout?
What are the resolution and accuracy of the K-AN8?
16 bit conversion, accurate to ±0.0015% of full scale. See K-AN8: technical specifications.
What voltage range can the K-AN8 accept?
Up to ±80 V, on software switchable ranges of ±80 V, ±40 V, ±20 V or ±10 V. The analogue channels are protected against overvoltage to +150 V. Keep each input within ±75 V of analogue ground and within ±150 V of the other inputs. See K-AN8: technical specifications.
Why can't I log all channels at 10 kHz?
The CAN bus sets the limit. Every sample travels on CAN, so the sample rate follows the number of channels: all 8 channels at 1 kHz, 4 at 2 kHz or 2 at 10 kHz. Two channels at 10 kHz already take a 1 Mbit/s bus to its maximum load. The K-BOX analogue inputs work the same way. See K-AN8: technical specifications.
K-CAL
How many modules can K-CAL connect to at once?
Up to five K-Series modules at the same time, configured from one window. See K-CAL: installing the software and CAN interface drivers.
Can I change the CAN identifiers a module uses?
Yes. K-CAL lets you name and set the CAN identifier for each group of channels.
For the steps, see these guides:
- K-BOX: configuring analogue, thermocouple and digital channels
- K-TC: configuring channels and CAN output in K-CAL
Can I apply formulas or tables to a channel?
Yes. K-CAL lets you create formulas or conversion tables and assign one to each K-BOX analogue or digital channel. The module then sends scaled values. See K-BOX: conversion tables and formulas.
