K-BOX: calibrating inputs and updating firmware

Updated

Calibrate the K-BOX inputs against a calibrated source to improve accuracy, clear a calibration that went wrong and update the module firmware.

Before you start

The Calibration tab

Open the Calibration tab and select Load to read the calibration stored in K-BOX.

The K-CAL Calibration tab with the RUN button, a Reference list, the measured value, a noise bar, Settings, Noise Level thresholds, channel buttons ADC 0 to 7 and TC 0 to 7, and a grid of four reference points per channel
The Calibration tab. The grid lists four reference points for every analogue and thermocouple channel.
RUN
Calibrates the selected point of the selected channel.
Reference
The value of the calibration point, a voltage for an analogue channel or a temperature for a thermocouple.
Measured value
What K-BOX reads on the selected channel now.
Noise
A bar that shows how noisy the input is.
Settings
With Go to next channel ticked, K-CAL moves to the next channel after each point.
Noise Level
The two noise thresholds the Noise bar uses. Tolerance Default restores them.
Analog Inputs and Thermo Couples
Buttons to select the channel, ADC 0 to ADC 7 and TC 0 to TC 7.
Clear calibration and Clear channel
Remove the calibration of the module, or of the selected channel.

Calibrate an input

Choose calibration points that suit the signals you expect. For example, if a channel will see 0 V to +38 V, calibrate its 0 V and +40 V points.

  1. Connect the reference source. Wire the calibrated source to the input you are calibrating.
  2. Choose the point. Select its value in the Reference list.
  3. Select the channel. Use its button under Analog Inputs or Thermo Couples, or select the point in the grid.
  4. Set the source. Adjust the calibrated source until it matches the reference value.
  5. Select RUN. If the input is stable and correct, K-CAL updates the calibration of that point.
  6. Repeat for every point. Do the same on each channel you need.
  7. Select Commit. K-CAL saves the calibration to K-BOX and creates a report of the calibration.

Commit writes the calibration to the module and creates a report with the pass or fail result for each channel.

If the reading and the reference are too far apart, K-CAL warns you before it calibrates the point. Unless you are sure the reference is right, select No and check the wiring and the source.

The warning K-CAL shows when the reading is far from the reference.

Clear the calibration

If a calibration went wrong, clear it and start again.

  1. Select Clear calibration. To clear only the selected channel, select Clear channel instead.
  2. Confirm. Select Yes.
  3. Watch the status messages. They appear at the bottom of the K-CAL window. If you cannot see them, drag the light blue divider upwards.
  4. Wait for the confirmation. The messages end with "Calibration table was cleared."

Update the firmware

K-CAL installs the K-BOX firmware as a .hex file, usually in C:\Program Files (x86)\Influx Technology\K-Box Config\firmware. For the latest K-CAL, see Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.

  1. Open the Reprogramming tab.
  2. Select Open. Find the hex file, for example KBox_B05_F032.hex, and select Open.
  3. Select Commit. A progress bar appears at the bottom of the window.
  4. Wait for the bar to fill. The firmware update is complete when the bar reaches the right-hand side.
