K-TCPinout
K-TC: connector pinouts
Wire a K-TC correctly the first time: which pins carry CAN and power, how the USB port is laid out and which way round a thermocouple plug goes.
Front panel
Every K-TC has two 9-way D-Sub CAN connectors, one USB Micro-B port and a bank of miniature thermocouple sockets:
- CAN in: male 9-way D-Sub, with screw-lock nuts.
- CAN out: female 9-way D-Sub, with screw-lock nuts. It carries the same signals as CAN in, so a second module or a 120 Ω terminator plugs in here.
- micro-USB: USB 2.0 Micro-B, for K-CAL and K-Log.
- Thermocouple sockets TC0 upwards: 8, 16 or 32 depending on the model.

CAN connectors
Both D-Sub connectors carry CAN and the module supply. Use pin 3 for signal ground and pin 5 for power ground.
| Pin | Signal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Not connected |
| 2 | CAN-L, CAN bus low |
| 3 | CAN ground (signal ground) |
| 4 | Not connected |
| 5 | Power ground, the return for the pin 9 supply |
| 6 | Not connected |
| 7 | CAN-H, CAN bus high |
| 8 | Not connected |
| 9 | Supply, 4.5 to 31 V DC |
For the link cables, the terminator and the daisy-chain wiring, see K-Series link cables, termination and terminals. For CAN wiring in general, see CAN bus wiring: termination, cable length and grounding.
USB Micro-B port
The USB port has functional galvanic isolation (see the K-TC specification). Use a USB A to Micro-B cable, such as INF4300. For other cables, see Cables and accessories: part number index.
| Pin | Signal | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VBUS | USB supply, 5 V |
| 2 | D− | USB data minus, NRZI line coding |
| 3 | D+ | USB data plus, NRZI line coding |
| 4 | ID | Mode detect |
| 5 | GND | Ground |
Thermocouple sockets
The thermocouple inputs are miniature flat-pin sockets for standard miniature type K, J and T plugs. The narrow blade is positive and the wide blade is negative. Which blade sits on top differs by model, so match the + and − printed beside each row: the current K-TC32 panel prints − by the top contact and + by the bottom one, while the older manual and the printed card say + on top.
| Position | Signal |
|---|---|
| Narrow blade | Thermocouple positive (+) |
| Wide blade | Thermocouple negative (−) |
Thermocouple plug dimensions
The sockets take a male flat-pin miniature thermocouple plug of these dimensions:

| Feature | Millimetres | Inches |
|---|---|---|
| Blade length | 12.7 | 0.5 |
| Blade centres | 8 | 0.31 |
| Narrow blade width | 2.4 | 0.09 |
| Wide blade width | 3.17 | 0.13 |
| Body length | 29.57 | 1.2 |
| Body width | 20.6 | 0.81 |
| Cable clamp | 40 AWG wire up to 5.5 mm cable | Up to 0.22 |
