K-TC: standalone logging with K-Log

Updated

Set K-TC to record on its own, with no logger and no PC attached, then download the logs and export them to CSV, MAT or RXD.

What you need

  • A K-TC with internal storage: INF2204.02P, INF2205P or INF2206P. Its 8 GB internal storage holds months of data.
  • A Windows PC on which you have administrator rights.
  • A USB A to Micro-B cable, such as INF4300.
  • A supply for the module while it logs. K-TC32 always needs an external supply, even during setup, because it cannot run from USB. See K-Series: connecting and powering modules.

The module also sends its readings on CAN while it logs. To set that side up, see K-TC: configuring channels and CAN output in K-CAL.

Install K-Log

K-Log needs the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and the .NET Framework 4.7.2 runtime. If either is missing, install it from Microsoft's Visual C++ downloads page first.

  1. Get the installer. Download K-Log. For the link, see Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
  2. Run the setup file. Select Next to start. To stop before anything is installed, select Cancel.
  3. Choose the folder and users. Keep the default folder if you can, choose which Windows users can use K-Log, then select Next.
  4. Confirm. Select Next to install, then Close when the installer finishes.

Install the USB driver

  1. Run the driver installer. Run TCXXInstaller.exe with administrator rights.
  2. Install. Select Next, then Finish when the TCXX driver is installed.

K-CAL also includes a K-TC USB driver installer. See K-CAL: installing the software and CAN interface drivers.

K-Log at a glance

Open K-Log from the desktop icon or the Influx Technology folder in the Start menu. Some toolbar buttons work only while a module is connected.

K-Log main window: a toolbar with Import Config, Save Config, Configure, Internal Storage and Set Time; a Configuration panel with Send Config, a rate for each group of four channels, channel names TC0 to TC28 and a Max Logging Time box set to 31; the status bar reads Connected, TC-08
The Configuration panel lists only the channel groups your model has. The others show Not Use.
Import Config
Opens a saved configuration (an XML file with the channel names and rates).
Save Config
Saves the working configuration to the PC as XML.
Configure
Opens the Configuration panel.
Internal Storage
Lists the files in the module's internal storage.
Set Time
Sets the module's clock.

The status bar shows the connection status, the K-TC model, the firmware version and the serial number of the connected module.

Prepare a configuration

  1. Connect the module. Open K-Log and connect the K-TC to the PC over USB.
  2. Set the sampling rates. In the Configuration panel, select a rate for each group of four channels, for example TC(0-3).
  3. Name the channels. Enter a name for each channel in the Name column. K-Log uses these names when it exports data.
  4. Save the configuration. Select Save Config. Keep the XML file. You load it again when you export, so the exported data carries your channel names.
  5. Send it to the module. Select Send Config.

Set the maximum log time

The Max Logging Time, [min] box sets the longest time a single log file covers. Set it before you send a new configuration, because it goes to the module with the configuration.

Select Set Time to set the module's clock, so the timestamps in your logs are right.

Retrieve and export logs

  1. Connect the module. Connect the K-TC to the PC over USB. The status bar shows the module's status.
  2. Open the internal storage. Select Internal Storage. The window lists every log file with its start time, end time and size.
  3. Load your channel names. Select Import Config and open the XML configuration you saved.
  4. Select the files. Select the log files you want.
  5. Open the export window. Open the Download menu and select Advanced. The Export data window opens.
  6. Choose the channels. On File channels, tick the channels to export. Check all ticks every thermocouple and Uncheck all clears them.
  7. Choose the format and location. On General, select the Output format (CSV, MAT or RXD), then select Browse to choose where to save the file.
  8. Export the data. Select Process. To stop the export, select Cancel.
K-Log Internal Storage window: a toolbar with Refresh, Download, Show datalog and Format SD, a timeline of recordings over three days, and a list of log files with start time, end time and size
The timeline above the list shows when the module was logging.

The pages of the Export data window:

General
The output format and location. Tick Use full date/time format to export real timestamps (dd:mm:yyyy:hh:mm:ss).
Input files
Shows the file being exported.
File channels
The channels to export.
Resampling
Exports all channels at one rate. Tick Use resampling when processing data, then set the Sampling rate and the Method (for example Last value). Tick Use synced time axes to choose where resampling starts and what happens before the first and after the last sample of each channel.
The Resampling page of the K-Log Export data window: resampling on at 200 ms with the Last value method, synced time axes on, starting from the first sample in the file
Resampling gives every channel the same time base in the exported file.

Other storage actions

Refresh
Updates the file list.
Download
Copies the selected log files from the module to the PC.
Export
Converts the raw data to another format.
Show datalog
Plots the selected log on an oscilloscope view, from which you can also export it.
Format SD
Formats the module's internal storage.
Find
Searches the list for log files.
