REXGEN Air: overview, intended use and safety

Updated

Learn what REXGEN Air is for, identify your model, check the contents of the box and read the safety rules before you install the logger.

This six-part series takes REXGEN Air from unboxing to recording. Its guides cover:

  • Overview and safety
  • Specifications
  • Getting started
  • Pinouts and installation
  • Recording data
  • GNSS

The cloud upload guides form a separate series.

These guides are for professional engineers and researchers who integrate the logger into systems with components from other manufacturers.

What REXGEN Air does

REXGEN Air is a CAN to cloud data logger. It records up to four CAN or CAN FD buses and one LIN bus to its internal storage. It also records two analogue and two digital inputs, GNSS position and a 6-axis IMU. It then uploads the logs over LTE Cat 1.

It is designed to become part of a vehicle or machine fleet from production onwards. Logs go to your own Amazon S3 bucket, an S3-compatible store, an FTPS server or the managed web app. You configure it with REXDESK, over USB or remotely. The configuration format is open XML with a published schema.

Key features

  • Up to four CAN or CAN FD buses (two on the 2-CAN models) and one LIN bus.
  • Two analogue inputs, two digital inputs and an optional relay driver output.
  • Integrated u-blox GNSS receiver and a 6-axis IMU (accelerometer and gyroscope). Dead reckoning and geofencing depend on the receiver fitted (see the specifications).
  • LTE Cat 1 modem with upload to Amazon S3, S3-compatible storage or FTPS.
  • Configuration and firmware over the air (COTA and FOTA), with signed firmware.
  • 16 or 32 GB of soldered eMMC storage with cyclic (FIFO) logging.
  • Live CAN and CAN FD trace monitoring, CAN and J1939 filters, triggers and several sleep modes.
  • Export to ASAM MDF4, MATLAB, CSV, ASC, BLF and TRC from REXDESK.
  • Automatic conversion in the cloud with the AWS Lambda example application.
  • Four status LEDs, Micro USB 2.0 for configuration and data retrieval, and an automotive Molex Mini50 24-way connector.
  • Free REXDESK configuration software, an open API, a command line interface and an XML schema.

Models

The part number tells you the number of CAN buses and the storage size. Every model has two analogue inputs, two digital inputs, GNSS and the IMU (accelerometer and gyroscope).

REXGEN Air models
Part number CAN or CAN FD buses eMMC storage
INF2116.22 2 16 GB
INF2116.23 2 32 GB
INF2116.42 4 16 GB
INF2116.43 4 32 GB

Earlier documentation also lists 8 GB models, INF2116.21 (2 CAN) and INF2116.41 (4 CAN).

The SIM slot takes a standard SIM.

Intended use

REXGEN Air is a data logger with onboard processing and telematics. It connects machines to the cloud and transfers data through Amazon S3 or FTPS. You can configure and reconfigure it remotely.

It is an open platform. Third-party tools can read its data and integrate it into any data system. The API includes functions to manage the logger over USB and to retrieve and convert its data.

FTPS protects the log-in to the server, not the files, because the logger does not support data channel encryption (PROT P). Where the files must be encrypted in transit, use S3 with an SSL connection. The cloud guides explain both routes.

Safety and liability

These rules apply to every REXGEN Air guide. The other guides repeat only the ones that matter to the task in hand.

  • Only a qualified professional may install, connect and commission the logger, following all applicable safety standards.
  • Disconnect the power supply before you connect the logger. Before you handle the logger, disconnect it completely, including any separately powered output loads.
  • Do not connect the housing to ground externally. This removes the supply's reverse voltage protection, so a reverse voltage would destroy the supply circuits.
  • REXGEN Air is rated IP50. Cover it if you mount it where water may get in. Never immerse it in water or any other liquid.
  • Do not use the logger without its enclosure.
  • Signal inputs (CAN, analogue or digital) must not exceed ±28 V.
  • For stable operation, all sensors and inputs must share the same ground as the logger's power supply.
  • The CAN buses and the USB port are not isolated. CAN and USB isolators are available separately. Take care when you plug in the USB cable. Disconnect the logger's power supply while it is connected to a PC over USB.
  • Do not use the logger's USB port for standalone logging. It may damage the port, and the warranty does not cover that damage.
  • Tighten the connector fully.
  • Terminate each end of a CAN bus with 120 Ω across CAN-H and CAN-L.
  • Do not short-circuit any pins.
  • Use only components from the starter kits or the accessories supplied.
  • Keep solvents away from the rating label.
  • Only Influx Technology may repair the logger.

Influx Technology assumes no liability for damage caused by normal wear, installation errors or operating or maintenance faults. The same applies if the logger, its accessories or the software are modified without the prior approval of Influx Technology.

REXGEN Air carries a 12-month warranty. For the warranty terms, see our terms of service.

What is in the box

  • REXGEN Air logger (INF2116.2x or INF2116.4x).
  • Molex Mini50 dual-row 24-way mating connector.
  • Micro USB cable (one with every order, whatever the quantity).
