REXDESK: activate a licence and encrypt logs

Updated

Activate a REXDESK licence and create the keys that protect your data. Then encrypt a logger's files, or lock the logger so that only REXDESK with your key can read it or talk to it.

What needs a licence

REXDESK is free to download and use for configuring REXGEN loggers and exporting their data. Log encryption is a licensed feature, available on request. So is creating more than one snapshot file.

To ask for a licence, contact an engineer.

Activate a licence

You need administrator rights on the PC and an internet connection.

  1. Open the licence window. In REXDESK, select Help > License.
  2. Start the import. In the License window, select Import. The Activation window opens.
  3. Enter the code. Select Type license identification code and paste the code Influx Technology sent you. Or select Browse license file from disk and select the licence file. Then select OK.
The REXDESK Activation window with the Type license identification code option selected and an empty code field, and a Browse license file from disk option below.
Paste the licence identification code, or load a licence file.
  4. Check the status. Back in the License window, License status reads Active.

Manage encryption keys

Select Tools > Encryption Manager. The window lists the keys on this PC under Available Keys and shows the selected key's public key.

Generate New Key
Creates a new key to protect a logger's data.
Use Selected Key
Makes the selected key the one REXDESK uses, for example to read logs encrypted with it.
Import Key
Adds a key you exported earlier, or one a colleague sent you.
Export Key
Saves the selected key to a file.
Delete Key
Removes the selected key from this PC.

Encrypt logs and lock the device

  1. Create a key. Generate or import a key in the Encryption Manager first.
  2. Open the encryption settings. In Device Configuration, select Encrypt.
  3. Choose the key. Select it in the Encryption Key list.
  4. Choose the protection. Tick Encrypt Datalogs to encrypt the log files the logger writes. Tick Lock Device to stop anyone without the key communicating with the logger. You can tick both.
The Encrypt settings with an Encryption Key list and the Encrypt Datalogs and Lock Device check boxes; a note says only users with this encryption key can communicate with the device.
Encrypt the logs, lock the logger, or both.
  5. Send the configuration. Select Run. Logs recorded from now on are encrypted .rxe files.

Read encrypted logs

  1. Select the key. In the Encryption Manager, select the key the logs were encrypted with and select Use Selected Key.
  2. Download and export as usual. See REXDESK: download and export your logs.

To decrypt from the command line, pass the key file to convert-folder with the -E option. See REXDESK: convert, configure and reflash from the command line.
