REBEL and DIALOG: frequently asked questions
Find quick answers to the questions engineers ask most about REBEL LT, REBEL CT and DIALOG. They range from a logger that is not detected to a licence that has run out.
Connecting the logger
Why is the logger not detected?
The REBEL USB driver is probably not installed. Install it with the steps in the next answer, reconnect the USB cable and try again.
How do I install the REBEL driver?
- Search for it. Enter Rebel Drivers in the Windows search bar and run it. You can also find it in the Influx Technology folder of the Start menu.
-
Install from the DIALOG folder. If it is not there, run the installer from the
RebelDriversfolder inside the DIALOG installation folder, for exampleC:\Program Files (x86)\Influx Technology\DiaLog5.3.0.0\RebelDrivers. - Download it. If DIALOG is not installed, get the driver from the downloads guide. See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
Why is my configuration not uploading to the logger?
- Check the USB cable.
- Check that an SD card is in the logger. If it is not, insert one and format it once from DIALOG.
- If it still fails, contact technical support.
Recording problems
Why is the logger not recording CAN data?
- Check that the configuration uses the same bit rate as the bus.
- Check the physical connections.
- Check that the CAN bus is terminated.
The flowchart walks through the checks in order, starting from the F2 LED. For general bus checks, see the CAN bus troubleshooting guide.
The same checks as a list:
- Is the F2 LED on? If not, the logger has no valid configuration. Reset its power. If F2 stays off, connect the logger to DIALOG. If DIALOG shows "No Vehicle!", load a configuration. Otherwise, check that the logger holds the configuration you need and that it is on the SD card.
- If F2 is on, find the bus LED: F5 for CAN 0 (HS), F1 for CAN 1 (MS), F3 for the instrumentation bus.
- If the bus LED is off, the bus is missing from the configuration or the wiring is wrong. Check both.
- If the bus LED flickers, the bus or protocol settings are wrong.
- If the bus LED is steady, check the triggers. If you use a start trigger, check the pre-trigger time and check that the trigger condition is met.
Why is the logger not recording OBD data?
- Check that the ISO settings use the right Tester and Module Ident.
- Check that the vehicle supports each PID you added.
- Disable Send start section and Sample only valid PID in the ISO settings.
Can a REBEL logger record standard OBD data?
Yes. REBEL loggers record standard OBD-II live data. DIALOG has preconfigured options for the common PIDs. For the full procedure, see DIALOG: log UDS and OBD diagnostic data.
Watch: Quick OBD configuration out of the box, recorded with an earlier version of DIALOG (2:10)
Why is the logger not recording GNSS data?
- Check that the GNSS bus is in the configuration.
- Check that the GNSS antenna is connected to the logger.
- Check that the vehicle is somewhere with a satellite signal.
- If you log CAN together with GNSS, check that the CAN bus is active. When CAN goes quiet, GNSS logging stops after a while.
Does REBEL support SAE J1939?
Yes. REBEL LT and REBEL CT decode J1939 by PGN, including DM1 messages. You can read data from heavy-duty and off-highway machines without extensive configuration.
SD cards and your data
How do I get the data off the logger?
- In DIALOG, over the USB cable, with REBEL Explorer.
- Directly from the SD card, in a card reader on your PC.
How do I reach the SD card?
The card sits behind a flap. Press the flap at the top and lift it.
Which SD cards does the logger take?
REBEL LT takes SDHC cards up to 64 GB and ships with a preformatted 32 GB card. REBEL CT takes Extreme SDXC cards and ships with a 64 GB card. It also supports 128 GB cards.
Which card should I buy to replace a damaged one?
Use SanDisk Extreme Pro SD cards. Influx Technology does not guarantee smooth operation with other cards.
Can I reconfigure a REBEL by inserting a preconfigured SD card?
Yes. Format the card in the logger at least once first. Then:
- Insert the card in your PC.
- Open DIALOG.
- Choose the configuration. Right-click the configuration you want and select Send configuration to SD card.
- Choose the card and firmware. Select the SD card, then the firmware version the logger runs.
- Load the card. Insert the card in the logger and switch the logger on.
For the full SD card preparation, see DIALOG Remote: install it, prepare the SD card and maintain a REBEL.
Power, clock and instrumentation
Why do my logs have the wrong timestamps?
Connect the logger to your PC, open DIALOG and select Set Time in the top menu to copy the PC's clock to the logger.
The real-time clock runs from a rechargeable cell. If the logger has not been used for several weeks, the cell runs low. To charge it, power the logger from 12 V for more than 12 hours. Then set the time again and check that the logger keeps it. If it still loses time, the cell may need replacing.
When does REBEL LT power down, and how does it wake?
When both CAN buses stop sending messages, the logger waits for the delay set in its configuration and then powers down. It wakes when it receives any CAN message on CAN 0 or CAN 1.
What is the current consumption?
| State | REBEL LT | REBEL CT |
|---|---|---|
| Logging | 250 to 350 mA | About 300 mA |
| Sleep | About 80 mA | About 80 mA |
| Power down | Under 2 mA | About 3 mA |
An instrumentation module on AUX/CAN1 does not power on. Why?
Auxiliary power is disabled in the configuration. In DIALOG, open the project's Properties, tick Aux Power On on the Settings tab and send the configuration again. For the steps, see REBEL breakout cables: INF4203 and INF4204.1 multi-connect pinouts.
Is REBEL LT isolated?
Yes. The REBEL LT USB port is galvanically isolated. The isolation barrier keeps voltage spikes, ground loops and other electrical disturbances away from the logger and the PC connected to it. REBEL CT has galvanic isolation on USB and the enclosure.
What the LEDs mean
If the labels on your logger have worn off, use this list.
| LED | Meaning |
|---|---|
| F1 | CAN 1 (MS) bus traffic |
| F2 | The logger is configured and ready |
| F3 | Instrumentation or trigger status |
| F4 | GNSS status. Flashes while acquiring data. |
| F5 | CAN 0 (HS) bus traffic |
| Status | On: waiting. Flashing: logging. |
| Connect | On: connected over USB, Wi-Fi or LTE |
| SD card | Lit when a card is detected |
REBEL LT
Is there free software to configure REBEL LT?
Yes. DIALOG Configurator is free and ships with REBEL LT. It sets up the logger and exports logs to CSV and MDF4. For live data, graphical analysis and GPS maps, you need the paid DIALOG Standard.
Where are the REBEL LT pinouts?
See REBEL LT: connector pinouts.
REBEL CT
How is REBEL CT different from the other loggers?
REBEL CT has an IP65 aluminium enclosure. It records two CAN 2.0 buses, two CAN FD buses and two LIN channels alongside its analogue and digital inputs. It runs XCP, CCP and UDS on the same logger.
Where are the REBEL CT pinouts?
See REBEL CT: connector pinouts.
DIALOG
Which versions of DIALOG are there?
There are four. DIALOG Remote and DIALOG Configurator are free. DIALOG Standard and DIALOG Plus need a licence. Each adds to the one before. See DIALOG: what it does, versions and system requirements.
Where do I download DIALOG?
See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
Can I merge log files?
Yes, with batch processing in DIALOG Plus. See DIALOG Plus: batch processing, merging and conversion scripts.
Can I import BLF or ASC log files into DIALOG?
No. DIALOG exports to BLF and ASC but does not import them.
Why does my log data show the wrong date and time?
The logger's clock cell may be drained. Connect the logger and set the time again. Check that the logger's date and time match the PC.
How do I move a licence to another PC?
- Open the Licence Manager. Select it from the DIALOG Help menu.
- Deactivate the licence. Note the activation identification code first. Then deactivate the licence on the current PC.
- Activate on the new PC. In the Licence Manager on the new PC, select I moved from another PC.
DIALOG says my licence has expired. Will it stop working?
No. DIALOG shows a notification when the support period of your licence ends, and its other functions carry on working. Ask technical support what the notice means for updates and map features on your licence.
Why is the GPS map not working in DIALOG?
- Check that the PC has an active internet connection.
- On a corporate network, check that the proxy is disabled.
- Check that the licence is active. The map overlay needs an active licence.
