REBEL and K-Series: wiring the wake-up pin and digital I/O

Updated

Wake a REBEL logger from sleep with an external switch, transistor or relay. Wire the digital inputs and outputs of REBEL, K-BOX and K-AN8 without exceeding their limits.

Where the pins are

The wake-up pin is on REBEL loggers only. K-BOX and K-AN8 have digital channels but no wake-up input.

Wake a REBEL logger with the wake-up pin

The wake-up pin is held high inside the logger. To wake the logger from sleep, switch the pin to power ground for longer than 20 ms. Use one of three circuits:

  • Switch. A push button or contact between the wake-up pin and power ground.
  • Transistor. An NPN transistor with its collector on the wake-up pin and its emitter on power ground. Your control signal switches it on through a base resistor.
  • Relay. A relay contact between the wake-up pin and power ground, with the coil driven by a separate circuit.

Wake-up is pin 5 of the logger's 25-way OBD and INST connector and pin 13 of the INF4204.1 Dig/An lead. Once awake, the logger stays awake while a CAN bus is active.

Once awake, the logger stays awake while a CAN bus is active, then goes back to sleep after the delay set in its configuration. For the power states, see REBEL LT and REBEL CT: overview and software.

Wire a digital input

As an input, a digital pin reads low or high against fixed thresholds (see the limits below). Pull the input up to the +4.5 V instrumentation supply through a 1 kΩ resistor. Then pull it low with one of these:

  • A switch to power ground
  • An NPN transistor to power ground, driven by your control signal
  • A relay contact to power ground
  • A Schmitt trigger buffer such as the SN74LVC1G14, which drives the input directly

NPN transistor Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input Control The transistor turned on pulls the input low. Relay contact Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input Relay coil in a separate circuit closes the contact A closed contact pulls the input low. Schmitt-trigger buffer Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input Signal The buffer output drives the input directly. The input reads low below VIL and high above VIH. Take VIL, VIH, the pull-up value and the maximum input voltage from the product guide. Every circuit shares the module ground.

On K-BOX and K-AN8, three of the four digital channels also work as frequency, counter or pulse inputs. They work up to 100 kHz, with a minimum pulse of 100 ns.

Drive a load from a digital output

As an output, a digital pin is an open collector. It switches the load's return to ground. The load takes its positive supply from elsewhere.

REBEL outputs

There are five ways to use a REBEL output:

  • Logic input. Pull the output up to +4.5 V instrumentation through 1 kΩ and feed a Schmitt trigger buffer.
  • LED from +4.5 V. Connect an LED and a 210 Ω resistor in series from +4.5 V instrumentation to the output.
  • LED from +12 V. Connect an LED and a 1 kΩ resistor in series from +12 V to the output.
  • Relay. Connect a relay coil from +12 V to the output, with a series resistor to keep the current inside the output limit.
  • Transistor. Pull the output up to +4.5 V through 1 kΩ. Use it to drive the base of an NPN transistor that switches a larger load.

Imax is the output current limit in the REBEL limits table. Every circuit shares the logger ground.

K-BOX and K-AN8 outputs

K-BOX and K-AN8 have four open-collector outputs rated 45 V and 10 mA. They switch relays, indicators and logic inputs. Drive bigger loads through a relay, with a flyback diode across the coil.

Limits for REBEL LT and REBEL CT

Earlier documentation gives two sets of figures. The table uses the REBEL LT specification for both loggers.
