K-IEPE and K-PT add-ons: specifications, pinouts and IEPE measurement

Updated

K-IEPE and K-PT are add-on modules that are not currently sold. This guide keeps their specifications, connectors and K-CAL setup in one place.

What the add-ons do

Both add-ons let a K-BOX or K-AN8 measure sensors its analogue inputs cannot read directly. Each connects to the host module's 25-way analogue connector with a 25-way cable and outputs signal voltages to its analogue inputs. You configure calibration and sampling rates in K-CAL.

  • K-IEPE (INF2213) powers up to four IEPE sensors, such as accelerometers, through BNC connectors. No other sensor supply is needed.
  • K-PT (INF2212) connects up to four PT100 or PT1000 resistance temperature detectors through two 9-way D-Sub connectors.

K-IEPE connectors

Each IEPE sensor plugs into one of the four BNC connectors.

The 25-way connector to the host module is a female D-Sub with nuts. Earlier documentation gives it the K-AN8 ADC table, with eight differential inputs and +24 V and +5 V outputs. That table does not fit a four-channel module.

K-PT connectors

The two sensor connectors are male 9-way D-Sub connectors with nuts. Each carries two 4-wire RTD channels. Ex is the excitation pair and Vs is the sense pair.

The 25-way connector to the host module is a female D-Sub with nuts. Earlier documentation repeats the K-AN8 ADC table for it, with eight differential inputs and +24 V and +5 V outputs. It warns not to apply voltages outside the range K-PT is configured for.

Set up the add-on in K-CAL

On the Analog Channels tab, set Additional Board to the add-on you have connected. The tab then shows its settings. On a K-BOX, the thermocouple settings stay below them.

K-PT: the RTD settings

  • RTD(0-3): the CAN ID and rate at which the module sends the four RTD channels.
  • Sensor Type: Pt 100 or Pt 1000, set per channel.

K-IEPE: the IEPE settings

  • IEPE 0 to IEPE 3: a CAN ID and rate for each channel, the sensor Sensitivity in mV/g and the Offset in mV.
  • IEPE Transmit - Measure: Combined sends all the IEPE data in one CAN message with one CAN ID. Individual sends each IEPE channel with its own CAN ID.

Measure IEPE sensors

Measure each sensor's offset at rest first, then enter it in K-CAL. The IEPE channels reach the host module on its odd analogue inputs: IEPE 0 on ADC 1, IEPE 1 on ADC 3, IEPE 2 on ADC 5 and IEPE 3 on ADC 7.

  1. Connect the add-on and the sensors. Connect the K-IEPE to the K-BOX and the IEPE sensors to the IEPE 0 to 3 inputs.
  2. Prepare the analogue channels. On the Analog Channels tab, set Additional Board to Not Connected and the software range of the odd channels to ±20 V.
  3. Measure the offsets. Keep the sensors at rest and open the Measurement tab. Note the values of ADC 1, ADC 3, ADC 5 and ADC 7 in mV.
  4. Enter the offsets and sensitivities. Back on the Analog Channels tab, set Additional Board to IEPE. Enter each noted value as the channel's Offset and the sensor's Sensitivity.
  5. Check the readings. Open the Measurement tab again.
  6. Export the DBC. Select Combined under IEPE Transmit - Measure, export the DBC file and import it into DIALOG.
