REBEL LT and REBEL CT: overview and software

Updated

This series covers REBEL LT and REBEL CT, from choosing a logger to wiring it. It covers what each one does, its specifications, connector pinouts, breakout cables and I/O wiring. Start here to pick the logger and the DIALOG version you need.

What REBEL LT and REBEL CT do

REBEL LT and REBEL CT are CAN bus data loggers for vehicle development. Each one records the vehicle networks, its analogue and digital inputs and any diagnostic requests on one clock, to a removable SD card. Diagnostics run on the same logger that records the bus, so a fault and the request that found it share a timeline.

You configure both loggers in DIALOG on a Windows PC and load the configuration over USB or on the SD card. Then you fit the logger and leave it. It sleeps when the buses go quiet and wakes when they come back.

Choose between REBEL LT and REBEL CT

REBEL LT is the lower-cost logger. It records two CAN buses, K-Line and four analogue channels. Choose REBEL CT when the programme needs CAN FD, LIN or an IP65 metal enclosure.

Both loggers stack with the K-Series instrumentation range (K-TC, K-BOX and K-AN8). For the full figures, see REBEL LT and REBEL CT: specifications.

Software you use with a REBEL logger

DIALOG is the companion software for REBEL loggers. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 and comes in four versions. Each version adds to the one before it.

DIALOG versions and what each one adds
Version Licence What it adds
DIALOG Remote Free Maintenance: format the SD card, set the clock, update the firmware and send a configuration on the SD card
DIALOG Configurator Free Full configuration (CAN, LIN, DBC files), the DBC and ODX editors and export to CSV, MDF, MDF4, BLF and ASC
DIALOG Standard Licence The live data viewer, graphical analysis, the synchronised GPS map, XCP and CCP ECU measurement and export to MATLAB MAT and nCode S3
DIALOG Plus Licence ASAM A2L import, batch processing and data file merging for logs from whole fleets

REBEL LT ships with DIALOG Configurator, which is enough to set up the logger and export your logs. REBEL CT ships with DIALOG Standard. To install DIALOG and manage a licence, see DIALOG: install it and activate, deactivate or move a licence. For the maintenance tool on its own, see DIALOG Remote: install it, prepare the SD card and maintain a REBEL.

Both loggers also ship with Module Analyser Lite, for UDS diagnostics and ODX frameworks.

How a REBEL logger runs unattended

A REBEL logger has three power states. While a bus is active, it records. When both CAN buses stop sending messages, it waits for the delay you set in the configuration and then goes to sleep. It wakes and starts recording again on the next CAN message.

  • Wake on CAN. Any message on CAN 0 or CAN 1 wakes the logger (WakeOnCAN).
  • Wake on signal. Pulling the wake-up pin to ground for longer than 20 ms wakes it from sleep. See REBEL and K-Series: wiring the wake-up pin and digital I/O.
  • Back to logging. On REBEL LT, logging starts within 20 ms of waking from sleep and in under 5 seconds from power down.
Current draw at 12 V in each power state
State REBEL LT REBEL CT
Logging 250 to 350 mA About 300 mA
Sleep About 80 mA About 80 mA
Power down (deep sleep) Under 2 mA About 3 mA

The current draw in each state differs per logger: see the table in the guide.

A battery-backed real-time clock keeps time while the logger is unpowered. The cell is rechargeable. If the logger has not been used for several weeks, power it from 12 V for more than 12 hours before you set the clock.

How the parts fit together

A typical installation uses one 25-way connector on the logger, broken out by the supplied cable into standard 9-way D-Sub leads.

The logger records to the SD card, which any PC can read; copy the recordings over USB or with a card reader.
  1. Configure in DIALOG. Create a project, add the buses, DBC files and triggers, and set the sleep mode.
  2. Load the configuration. Send it to the logger over USB, or write it to the SD card and insert the card.
  3. Connect the vehicle. The CAN0/PWR lead carries CAN 0 and the supply, for example from the vehicle OBD port through an adapter cable. Instrumentation modules connect to the AUX/CAN1 lead, which can power them when Aux Power On is ticked in the configuration.
  4. Record. The logger records to the SD card in a FAT32 file system that any PC can read.
  5. Retrieve and export. Copy the logs over USB with REBEL Explorer in DIALOG, or read the card in a PC. Then export them to the format your tools use.

For the cables and for logging K-Series modules, see these guides.

Who this manual is for

This series is for engineers and researchers who install, configure and maintain REBEL loggers, or build them into systems with parts from other manufacturers. It covers use, installation and operation. It does not replace the safety practice of the vehicle or rig you work on.
