REXGEN ProGetting started
REXGEN Pro quick start guide
Take REXGEN Pro from the box to its first CAN log and on to the cloud, in the order of the printed quick start card.
Before you start
- REXGEN Pro and the four mounting screws supplied.
- A cable to the JAE 34-pin connector, such as the
INF4219breakout, sold separately. - An external supply of 6.5 V to 27 V.
- The Wi-Fi (FAKRA Z), GNSS (FAKRA C) and LTE (FAKRA D) antennas you need.
- A nano SIM, if your logger has a SIM tray and you want LTE.
- A Windows PC on the same Wi-Fi network as the logger.
- The bit rates of the buses you will record.
Get the software
- Download REXDESK. REXDESK is free. See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
- Run the installer. You may need administrator rights.
See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.

| 25 | CAN 2, CAN-H |
| Pin | Signal | Wire colour |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Transmit + (D1) | White with orange stripe |
| 2 | Transmit − (D1) | Orange with white stripe, or solid orange |
| 3 | Receive + (D2) | White with green stripe |
| 6 | Receive − (D2) | Green with white stripe, or solid green |
Eight LEDs on the lid each show one function.
| LED | Function | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | CAN 0 to CAN 3 | Solid: configuration active. Slow blink: logging. Fast blink: bit rate mismatch or CAN error, so check the connection. |
| 5 | AIP | Solid: the application interface platform is active. Any other pattern means a possible fault. |
| 6 | GNSS | Solid: configured. Off: not configured. Blinking: valid fix. |
| 7 | LTE | Solid: connected. Off: no LTE connection. Blinking: data moving over LTE. |
| 8 | Wi-Fi | Solid: connected. Off: no interface connected. Blinking: data moving over Wi-Fi. |
Fit the SIM, antennas and power
-
Eject the SIM tray. Skip this step if your logger has a soldered SIM. Remove the tray with care, because mishandling it can damage the logger and the SIM.

The SIM slot sits on the same end as the antenna ports. - Insert the SIM chip facing upwards. Slide the tray back in until it sits flush.
- Connect the antennas. Fit each antenna to its colour-coded FAKRA port. A loose or missing antenna loses GNSS, LTE or Wi-Fi data.
- Connect the CAN buses. Match CAN-H and CAN-L on the vehicle or machine to the logger, channel by channel. Each end of every bus needs a 120 Ω resistor across CAN-H and CAN-L.
- Connect the supply last. Feed 6.5 V to 27 V to pin 18 and power GND to pin 19. Tighten the connector fully and do not short any pins.
- Mount the logger. Fix it with the four screws supplied. Keep the enclosure fully fitted and sealed, so the logger keeps its IP rating.
Connect over Wi-Fi
- Join the logger's hotspot. On your PC, tablet or phone, open the Wi-Fi settings. Select the network named after the logger's serial number.
- Enter the hotspot password. Use the password supplied with the logger, and change it after setup.
- Choose your network. In the Wi-Fi configuration window, select the network the logger should join. Select Configure, and the hotspot disconnects.
- Wait for LED 8. After a pause of about a minute, LED 8 turns solid. The logger has joined your network.
- Open the TCP/IP connection. In REXDESK, select the interface icon at the lower left of the status bar, then select TCP/IP.
- Find the logger. Select Scan Local Network, select the IP address of your logger and select Connect. The status bar changes to CONNECTED.
Update the firmware
Update the firmware before your first recording. The update ends with a format, which erases every log on the logger.
- Select the firmware. With the logger connected, select Device > Reflash in REXDESK. Select the firmware file.
- Wait for the LEDs to stop flashing. The logger may disconnect from REXDESK, and reconnects when the update is complete.
- Format the internal storage. Open Internal Storage and select Format SD. This formats the logger's eMMC.
- Send a fresh configuration. Follow Record your first log below.
See REXGEN: update the firmware and set the clock.
Set the time
- Open the clock settings. With the logger connected, select Device > Set Device Time.
- Choose the time source. Select Synchronise with PC, or select Set Custom Date Time and enter a time.
- Save it. Select Set Time.
Record your first log
- Add a Log All block. Double-click the Log All icon, or drag it into the configuration window. It records every message on the bus.
- Send the configuration. Select Run on the top toolbar and save the project.
- Confirm the upload. When REXDESK reports that the configuration uploaded, select OK. The CAN LEDs change to a slow blink while the logger records.
Open a log from internal storage
- Choose the log. Select Internal Storage on the top toolbar, then select the file you want to open.
- Download it. Open the Download tab and choose a format.
See REXDESK: download and export your logs.
Set up cloud upload
- Open the cloud settings. Select Tools > Cloud Settings.
- Add the mobile settings. On the Mobile tab, select New Mobile and enter your SIM provider's details.
- Add the bucket. On the S3 tab, select New S3 and enter the bucket details.
- Enable the upload. In the Device Configuration window, open the Upload tab and tick Enable AWS. With one cloud setting saved, REXDESK fills in the rest. With several, choose one from each drop-down menu.
- Send the configuration. Select Run, save the project and select OK when it has uploaded.
A logger already connected to the server can take a new configuration over the air. Set the configuration check time and export the configuration with Export ReXgen Configuration (rxc). Rename the file to exactly config.rxc. These guides give every step:
- REXDESK: upload logs to AWS S3, MinIO or Google Cloud Storage
- REXDESK: send a new configuration over the air
