REXGEN 1Getting started

REXGEN 1 quick start guide

Updated

Take REXGEN 1 from the box to its first CAN log, in the order of the printed quick start card.

Before you start

  • REXGEN 1 (INF2109.01) with its integrated 9-way D-Sub lead.
  • The micro USB cable and the four mounting screws supplied.
  • A cable to the bus and to power, such as INF4103 (OBD-II to 9-way D-Sub) or INF4206 (multi power supply and CAN cable).
  • An external supply of +5 V to +27 V.
  • A Windows PC.
  • The bit rate of the CAN bus you will record.

Get the software

  1. Download REXDESK. REXDESK is free. See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
  2. Run the installer. You may need administrator rights to install the drivers.
  3. Install the REXGEN USB driver. Search Windows for REXGEN Drivers and run it.

See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.

Connectors and LEDs

REXGEN 1 has one standard 9-way D-Sub connector, male with nuts. It carries the supply and the CAN bus.

Connect and power

Over USB the PC powers the logger for set-up; do not use the USB port for data logging.
  1. Switch off the supply. Connect the logger with the power off.
  2. Connect the D-Sub to the bus. Use your OBD or power cable. Tighten the connector screws fully, so the connection stays reliable.
  3. Match CAN-H and CAN-L. Pin 7 (CAN-H) goes to CAN-H on the vehicle or machine, and pin 2 (CAN-L) to CAN-L.
  4. Check the termination. Each end of the bus needs a 120 Ω resistor across CAN-H and CAN-L. See CAN bus wiring: termination, cable length and grounding.
  5. Connect USB for setup. Over USB the PC powers the logger. You can then configure it, retrieve data or use it as a J2534 pass-thru interface.
  6. Mount the logger. Fix it with the four screws supplied. Keep the enclosure fully fitted and sealed, so the logger keeps its IP rating.

Update the firmware

Update the firmware before your first recording. The update ends with a format, which erases every log on the logger.

  1. Select the firmware. With the logger connected over USB, select Device > Reflash in REXDESK. Select the firmware file.
  2. Wait for the LED to stop flashing. The logger may disconnect from the PC. It reconnects to REXDESK when the update is complete.
  3. Format the internal storage. Open Internal Storage and select Format SD. This formats the logger's eMMC.
  4. Send a fresh configuration. Follow Record your first log below.

See REXGEN: update the firmware and set the clock.

Set the time

  1. Open the clock settings. Open REXDESK, connect the logger and select Set Time on the toolbar.
  2. Choose the time source. Select Synchronise with PC, or select Set Custom Date Time and enter a time.
  3. Save it. Select Set Time.

Record your first log

  1. Add a Log All block. In REXDESK, double-click the Log All icon, or drag it into the configuration window onto CAN 0.
  2. Set the bit rate. Select the Bus icon. Choose the bit rate of the bus you are connected to.
  3. Send the configuration. Select Run on the toolbar and save the project.
  4. Confirm the upload. When REXDESK reports that the configuration uploaded, select OK.
  5. Check the LED. A slow blink means the logger is logging. A fast blink means a CAN error, so check the connection and the bit rate.

Open a log from internal storage

  1. Open the internal storage. Connect the logger and select Internal Storage.
  2. Choose the log. Select the file you want to open.
  3. Download it. Select Download and choose a format, for example MDF4, BLF or CSV.

See REXGEN: record a CAN trace and export it to BLF, ASC or MDF4.
