REXGEN: use the logger as a J2534 pass-thru interface
Install the REXGEN J2534 driver on a Windows PC. Your logger then works as a pass-thru CAN interface for K-CAL, SavvyCAN and any other J2534 application. You need REXGEN 1, REXGEN 2 or REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS and its micro USB cable.
What J2534 mode does
As well as logging, REXGEN 1 and REXGEN 2 work as pass-thru interfaces. SAE J2534 defines a Pass-Thru application programming interface (API), so any program written for it can talk to a vehicle's CAN bus through the logger. You can use existing J2534 tools or write programs for your own vehicle communication needs.
As a J2534 interface, the logger supports these protocols:
- ISO 14229 (UDS)
- ISO 14230
- CAN (ISO 11898)
- ISO 15765
- SAE J1939
J2534 works over the logger's micro USB 2.0 port. REXGEN Pro has no USB port and does not work as a J2534 interface. REXGEN Air does not support J2534.
Install the J2534 driver
-
Download the installer. Download
Rexgen_J2534_Installer.zipand extract it. - Run it. Start the installer on the Windows PC you use. It reports whether it is running on a 32-bit or 64-bit platform.
-
Install. Select Install. When it finishes, the fields show the J2534 driver, the configuration application, the API version and the firmware version.

The REXGEN J2534 installer before installation. - Check the registration. Check that the Windows registry holds the J2534 REXGEN entries. Applications read them to find the logger.
- Connect the logger. Plug the logger into the PC with its micro USB cable and connect it to the CAN bus.
Find the logger in your application
Applications that support J2534 list the installed devices. Select the REXGEN entry as the interface.
K-CAL
In K-CAL, open the Interface list, expand J2534 and select Rexgen. The status bar at the bottom of the window then shows the connection, the device and the bus activity.

To set up K-CAL, see K-CAL: installing the software and CAN interface drivers.
SavvyCAN
SavvyCAN reaches the logger through J2534 or, with firmware 2.18 or later, directly. For both routes, see REXGEN: live CAN with SavvyCAN.
Your own software
Any program written against the SAE J2534 Pass-Thru API can open the REXGEN logger. To control the logger itself from your own code, see REXGEN Open API: control a logger over USB from your own application.
If the logger does not appear
- Check that the REXGEN USB driver is installed. See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.
- Run the J2534 installer again and check that the driver and API version fields are filled in.
- Close REXDESK and any other program that may already be using the logger, then reconnect it.
- Check that the bit rate in your application matches the bus.
