K-CAL: viewing live data on the oscilloscope

Updated

Check what a K-Series module measures before you deploy it. Show any channel's value, plot channels on the K-CAL oscilloscope and save the trace.

Open the Measurement tab

Connect K-CAL to the module, then open the Measurement tab. For the connection, see K-CAL: installing the software and CAN interface drivers.

The top of the tab shows one channel's value. The bottom holds the item list and the oscilloscope.

K-CAL Measurement tab for a K-BOX: Measured and Conversion values for channel TC 5 at the top, radio buttons for the analogue, digital and thermocouple channels, the Item information list on the left and the oscilloscope with four thermocouple traces on the right
On a K-BOX the tab shows analogue, digital and thermocouple channels. A K-TC shows only its thermocouple groups.

Show a channel's value

Select the radio button of the channel you want. K-CAL shows its measured value. On a K-BOX, if a conversion table or formula is assigned to the channel, K-CAL also shows the converted value with its units and the formula or table name. Conversion tables and formulas are K-BOX features. See K-BOX: conversion tables and formulas.

K-CAL Measurement tab for a K-TC32: the measured value of TC 0 at the top, radio buttons for the four groups of eight thermocouples, and the oscilloscope with one trace per channel in separate bands
A K-TC32 shows one radio button per thermocouple, in groups of eight.

Add channels to the oscilloscope

There are three ways to put channels on the oscilloscope:

  • One channel. Select the channel's radio button, then select Scope Add on the toolbar.
  • All channels from the toolbar. Open the Scope Add menu and select Add all.
  • All channels from the item list. Right-click in the Item information area and select Add all.

Each channel you add appears in the Item information list with its colour, name, units and current value.

Item menu

Right-click in the Item information area for these commands:

Item information menu
Command What it does
Start New Log Clears the logged data and refreshes the oscilloscope
Rename Names the channel. The name appears in the Name column
Select All Selects every item
Deselect All Clears the selection of every item
Invert Selection Selects the items not selected and deselects the ones that were
Active Shows the selected items on the oscilloscope
Inactive Hides the selected items from the oscilloscope
Del Deletes the item highlighted in orange, or the selected items
Add Group Adds the selected item group to the oscilloscope
Del Group Removes the selected item group from the oscilloscope
Add all Adds every item to the oscilloscope
Del all Removes every item from the oscilloscope
Group and scale to Sets a custom scale for the selected items
Reset scaling Restores the default scaling
Not Use Removes conversion tables or formulas from the selected items (K-BOX)

Oscilloscope toolbar

The toolbar above the oscilloscope controls the plot. Its buttons are icons. The table lists their functions in order, from the left.

Oscilloscope toolbar functions
Function What it does
Online Puts the oscilloscope online
Clear Clears the data logged in the oscilloscope
Save Saves the logged data in one of the formats listed after the table
Open Opens previously saved data
Step mode Shows steps between data points
Separate Draws each item in its own band
Axis mode Changes the axis display mode
Show points Marks each data point
Cursors Shows measurement cursors
Reset zoom Resets the zoom factor
Reset X zoom Resets the X-axis zoom factor
Zoom in X / Zoom out X Zooms the time axis in or out
Fit Fits the items to the visible zoom area
Zoom in Y / Zoom out Y Zooms the value axis in or out
Zoom in all / Zoom out all Zooms both axes in or out

K-CAL saves oscilloscope data in these formats:

  • Vector MDF (.DAT)
  • MATLAB 5.0 (.MAT)
  • MATLAB 5.0 structured, single or double precision (.MAT)
  • MATLAB 5.0 structure extended (.MAT)
  • Comma-separated values (.CSV)

Oscilloscope menu

Right-click the oscilloscope for more options:

  • Separate
  • Step mode
  • Axis mode
  • Show points
  • Cursors
  • Scale
  • Axis color
  • Clear
  • Print
  • Export to image file
  • Copy to clipboard

Scale fixes the time axis at a span from 1 second to 10 minutes, or returns it to normal.

The oscilloscope right-click menu with Separate, Step mode, Axis mode, Show points, Cursors, Scale, Axis color, Clear, Print, Export to image file and Copy to clipboard; the Scale submenu lists 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 seconds, 1, 5 and 10 minutes, Normal, Zoom in and Zoom out
The Scale submenu also offers Zoom in and Zoom out.
