K-BOXSpecification

K-BOX: overview and specifications

Updated

Find out what K-BOX measures, how it reaches your logger and the full specification, so you can plan the channels, power and wiring before you install it.

This is step 1 of the six-part K-BOX series. The series covers:

  • The specification
  • The connector pinouts
  • Setting up channels in K-CAL
  • The digital measurement modes
  • Conversion tables and formulas
  • Calibration and firmware

What K-BOX does

K-BOX (INF2201) is the multi-DAQ module of the K-Series. It measures thermocouples, voltages, currents and PWM signals at the same time and sends the results periodically on the CAN bus. The measurement data is time synchronised with the vehicle network data your logger records.

K-BOX has no storage of its own. Any CAN logger records it, such as a REBEL, a REXGEN or a third-party logger. A DBC file describes the messages, so any tool that reads DBC files decodes them. Set the CAN IDs, rates, ranges and calibration in K-CAL. K-BOX keeps them when the power is off.

  • Stack it with other K-Series modules. The two CAN connectors carry CAN and power from one module to the next.
  • Use it for applications with many thermocouples and analogue inputs.
  • Leave it on a vehicle. WakeOnCAN and deep sleep suit unattended fleet installs.

You configure K-BOX over CAN in K-CAL. The title bar of this version reads K-Box Cal.

How K-BOX connects to a logger

K-BOX connects to the outside world only through CAN. It has no PC port, so you configure it in K-CAL through a CAN interface or an Influx Technology logger.

  • With a REBEL logger: the REBEL can power the module through the multi-connect cable when its auxiliary power output is enabled.
  • With a REXGEN logger: give the module an external supply. A REXGEN does not provide power for a K-Series module.
  • In a stack: give every extra module an external supply.

For each case in detail, see these guides:

Key features

  • Eight bipolar differential analogue inputs on software switchable ranges of ±80 V, ±40 V, ±20 V or ±10 V.
  • Up to eight type J, K or T thermocouples with cold junction compensation.
  • Four digital channels, three of which measure frequency, pulses, duty cycle, events or RPM up to 100 kHz.
  • Regulated 5 V and 24 V outputs to power external sensors.
  • Current measurement on the analogue inputs through a current clamp or shunt.
  • Galvanic isolation between the enclosure, power, CAN bus, analogue board and thermocouple board.
  • Configuration through a DBC file and K-CAL for Windows.
