K-BOX: connector pinouts

Updated

Use these tables to wire power, CAN, sensors and thermocouples to K-BOX, and to stay within the limits of each pin.

Connectors at a glance

K-BOX (INF2201) has these connectors and indicators:

  • Two 9-way D-Sub CAN connectors with nuts, one male and one female. Both carry the same signals, so CAN and power pass through a stack of K-Series modules.
  • One 25-way male D-Sub, labelled ADC, for the eight analogue inputs and the sensor supplies.
  • Eight miniature flat-pin thermocouple sockets, labelled TC0 to TC7.
  • Two LEDs, labelled Status and CAN.

Pins missing from the tables are not connected.

Digital pin limits

  • As inputs: keep the voltage between −8 V and +12 V. An input reads low below 1.5 V and high above 2.0 V.
  • As outputs: the open collector outputs are rated 45 V and 10 mA. Drive larger loads through a relay.

Only Digital 1 to 3 can measure signals. For the input and output modes, see K-BOX: configuring analogue, thermocouple and digital channels.

ADC connector

The ADC connector is a 25-way male D-Sub with nuts. Each analogue input is a differential pair. For example, input 0 uses pins 6 and 18, and input 7 uses pins 13 and 25.

Thermocouple sockets

The eight thermocouple sockets are miniature flat-pin sockets. Plug a miniature flat-pin thermocouple plug of type J, K or T into each one. The sockets fitted are green, the IEC colour for type K.

Wiring the digital pins

A switch, a transistor, a relay contact or a logic buffer can drive a digital input. Each pulls the input low against a pull-up resistor.

Four ways to drive a digital input DIGITAL INPUT · WIRING Four ways to drive a digital input Switch Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input A closed switch pulls the input low. NPN transistor Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input Control The transistor turned on pulls the input low. Relay contact Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input Relay coil in a separate circuit closes the contact A closed contact pulls the input low. Schmitt-trigger buffer Instrumentation supply Pull-up Input Signal The buffer output drives the input directly. The input reads low below VIL and high above VIH. Take VIL, VIH, the pull-up value and the maximum input voltage from the product guide. Every circuit shares the module ground.

An open collector output switches a load to ground. Supply the load from an external source and fit a flyback diode across a relay coil.

Switching a relay coil from an open collector output DIGITAL OUTPUT · WIRING Switching a relay coil from an open collector output Logger or I/O module open collector output Logic Output GND Output limits: Vmax, Imax Relay coil ≤ Imax Flyback diode + − Load supply +V, up to Vmax Common ground: supply negative to the GND pin Vmax and Imax are the output ratings in the product specification. The diode across the coil carries the switch-off spike so it never reaches the output.
