DIALOG: create projects and configurations and send them to a REBEL

Updated

Organise your work in projects and build a configuration with the right sleep mode, bus and bit rate. Then send it to a REBEL over USB or on its SD card.

How a configuration is built

A project holds configurations. A configuration holds the buses the logger listens to. Each bus holds one or more modules, each module holds protocols and each protocol holds the data items the logger records. Triggers, output signals and conversion tables belong to the configuration and sit beside the buses.

GNSS, the accelerometer and the analogue and digital inputs are buses, not protocols. Building a configuration needs DIALOG Configurator or above.

Manage projects

Projects live on the Projects tab of the database panel. Right-click a project for the same commands as the Project menu.

Create a project

  1. Open New Project. Select Project > New Project.
  2. Name it. Enter a name and select OK. The project appears in Local Projects.

Export a project

  1. Select the project. In Local Projects, right-click it and select Export Selected Project.
  2. Choose the export version. Select the version that matches the DIALOG release that will open the file, then select OK.
  3. Save the file. Choose a folder on the PC and select Save. DIALOG writes a .dpv file.

Export All Projects on the same menu exports every project on the Projects tab.

Delete a project

  1. Select the project. In Local Projects, right-click it and select Delete Project.
  2. Confirm the deletion. Select Yes. DIALOG deletes the project and its configurations.

Import a project

  1. Open Import Project. Select Import > Import Project.
  2. Choose the file. Select the .dpv file, then select Open. The project appears when processing ends.

Create a configuration

Every recording task starts with the same steps. The task guides then add the protocol or bus they need.

  1. Start the configuration. Select the project, then select Configuration > New Configuration. Enter a Configuration Name. The Properties tab also takes the VIN, user, calibration ID and software ID.
New Configuration window on the Properties tab with the configuration name field highlighted and side tabs for Sleep Mode, Settings, Rebel Commands and LED Config
The tabs down the side hold the sleep mode, settings, REBEL commands and LED configuration.
  2. Choose the sleep mode. Select the Sleep Mode tab and choose when the logger sleeps and what wakes it. Sleep Delay (min) sets how long the logger waits before it sleeps.
  3. Clear the wake-up limit. Clear Limit Module Wakeup, then select OK.
Sleep Mode list open showing No Sleep, Wake up on CAN 0 (HS) Activity, Wake up on CAN 1 (MS) Activity, Wake up on CAN 2 (Inst) Activity, Wake up on CAN 0/1 (HS/MS) Activity, Wake up on Alarm 1 and Power down Mode
    The sleep modes.
Sleep Mode tab with Wake up on CAN 0 (HS) Activity selected, Sleep Delay of 2 minutes and Limit Module Wakeup cleared
Limit Module Wakeup is cleared before you select OK.
  4. Add a bus. Select New Bus. In Choose Bus, select the channel your network is wired to, for example CAN 0 (HS), and select OK.
  5. Set the bit rate. In CAN Bus, choose the Bus Speed that matches the network, for example 500 kbit/s. For any other rate, choose Custom and enter it in bit/s in Custom Speed. On a CAN FD channel, also set CAN FD Speed. Select OK.
CAN Bus window with the Bus Speed list open showing 1000, 800, 500, 250 and 125 kbs and Custom, plus Custom Speed, Bus Mode, Listen Mode, CAN FD Speed and Non ISO CAN FD
The bit rate must match the vehicle network.
  6. Add a protocol. Select New Protocol and choose the type, then follow the task guide for it.
Choose Protocol Type window listing Diagnostic, CCP Protocol, XCP Protocol and CAN Monitor
    The four protocol types.
CAN Monitor
Records raw CAN frames or the signals you choose from a DBC file. See DIALOG: record raw CAN frames or DBC signals with a REBEL.
Diagnostic
Polls a module over UDS or OBD. See DIALOG: log UDS and OBD diagnostic data.
CCP Protocol, XCP Protocol
Measure ECU variables from an A2L file. See DIALOG: log ECU data over CCP or XCP from an A2L file.

GNSS, the accelerometer and the analogue and digital inputs are buses, not protocols. See DIALOG: record GNSS, analogue and digital inputs.

The Choose Bus list names every bus DIALOG knows, including some your logger does not have. Choose only channels your REBEL has. Its pinouts list them:

Send the configuration to a REBEL

Send a finished configuration, or a changed one, to the logger. The logger records with it from then on.

Over USB

  1. Connect the logger. Connect the REBEL to the PC with its USB cable.
  2. Send the configuration. Right-click it, or any item in it, and select Send Configuration to the Logger. The same command is on the Logger menu.

  3. Confirm the upload. Select Yes. DIALOG prepares the configuration, uploads it, sets it as active and checks it.
  4. Check the result. Status messages reports that the configuration has been uploaded.

On an SD card

  1. Prepare the card once. Format the SD card in the REBEL at least once before you use it this way. See DIALOG: set the clock, format the SD card and update REBEL firmware.
  2. Insert the card in the PC. Put the SD card in the PC's card reader and open DIALOG.
  3. Send to the card. Right-click the configuration, select Send configuration to SD card and choose the card.
  4. Choose the firmware version. Select the firmware version that matches the logger.
  5. Load the configuration. Put the card back in the logger and switch the logger on.

DIALOG Remote writes a configuration to a card the same way. See DIALOG Remote: install it, prepare the SD card and maintain a REBEL.
