REXGEN AirGetting started
REXGEN Air quick start guide
Take REXGEN Air from the box to its first CAN log and on to the cloud, in the order of the printed quick start card.
Before you start
- REXGEN Air with its Molex Mini50 mating connector.
- The micro USB cable and the four mounting screws supplied.
- A harness for the Mini50 connector, your own or a bench cable.
- An external supply of +5 V to +27 V.
- A Windows PC.
- The bit rate of each bus you will record.
- For cloud upload, a SIM card with a data plan and the GNSS and LTE antennas.
Get the software
- Download REXDESK. REXDESK is free. See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
- Run the installer. You may need administrator rights to install the drivers.
- Install the REXGEN USB driver. Search Windows for REXGEN Drivers and run it.
See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.
Connectors and LEDs
Power, the CAN buses, LIN and the inputs all run through the 24-way Molex Mini50 connector.
| Pin | Function | Optional |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Relay out 0 | Relay driver |
| 2 | Digital input 0 | |
| 3 | Analogue GND | |
| 4 | Analogue input 1 | |
| 5 | Wake-up / Clamp-15 | |
| 6 | CAN 0, CAN-L | |
| 7 | CAN 1, CAN-L | |
| 8 | CAN 2, CAN-L | Third CAN FD bus |
| 9 | CAN 3, CAN-L | Fourth CAN FD bus |
| 10 | USB D+ | Ask for it when ordering |
| 11 | 4.5 V out | |
| 12 | Digital input 1 | |
| 13 | Analogue input 0 | |
| 14 | Erase | |
| 15 | LIN | |
| 16 | GND | |
| 17 | Power GND | |
| 18 | Power supply, +5 V to +27 V | |
| 19 | CAN 0, CAN-H | |
| 20 | CAN 1, CAN-H | |
| 21 | CAN 2, CAN-H | Third CAN FD bus |
| 22 | CAN 3, CAN-H | Fourth CAN FD bus |
| 23 | USB +5 V | Ask for it when ordering |
| 24 | USB D− | Ask for it when ordering |
Build your own loom on the mating connector, a PCB header or terminals. For the bench, use the INF4216 cable (Mini50 to 25-way D-Sub) with the five-lead multi-connect cable INF4204.1. The INF4204.15 splitter gives 9-way D-Sub leads instead.
See REXGEN Air: pinouts, harnesses, LEDs and installation.
| LED | Function | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | CAN 0 and CAN 1 | Solid: configured to log CAN. Blinking: logging on that channel. |
| 3 | GNSS | Solid: configured to log GNSS. Blinking: logging. |
| 4 | Server connection | Fast blink: trying to connect. Slow blink: connected. |
Connect and power
- Leave the supply disconnected. You configure the logger over USB first, then power it from the external supply.
- Match CAN-H and CAN-L. CAN-H and CAN-L on the logger go to CAN-H and CAN-L on the vehicle or machine.
- Check the termination. Each end of the CAN bus needs a 120 Ω resistor across CAN-H and CAN-L. See CAN bus wiring: termination, cable length and grounding.
- Fit the connector securely. A loose connector makes the logger unreliable. Do not short-circuit any pins.
- Connect USB for setup. Plug the micro USB cable into the logger and the PC. The logger runs from USB power and appears in the REXDESK status bar.
- Mount the logger. Fix it with the four screws supplied.
Update the firmware
Update the firmware before your first recording. The update ends with a format, which erases every log on the logger.
- Select the firmware. With the logger connected over USB, select Device > Reflash in REXDESK. Select the firmware file.
- Wait for the LEDs to stop flashing. LED 1 and LED 2 flash alternately. The logger may disconnect from the PC, and reconnects to REXDESK when the update is complete.
- Format the internal storage. Open Internal Storage and select Format SD. This formats the logger's eMMC.
- Send a fresh configuration. Follow Record your first log below.
See REXGEN: update the firmware and set the clock.
Set the time
- Open the clock settings. With the logger connected, select Device > Set Device Time.
- Choose the time source. Select Synchronise with PC, or select Set Custom Date Time and enter a time.
- Save it. Select Set Time.
Record your first log
- Add a Log All block. Double-click the Log All icon, or drag it into the configuration window. It records every frame on the bus.
- Send the configuration. Select Run on the top toolbar and save the project. The logger names its files after the project.
- Confirm the upload. When REXDESK reports that the configuration uploaded, select OK.
- Power the logger from its external supply. Disconnect the USB cable first. LED 1 lights for a CAN 0 configuration and blinks while CAN 0 is logging.

Open a log from internal storage
- Reconnect the logger. Connect it to REXDESK over USB.
- Choose the log. Select Internal Storage on the top toolbar, then select the file you want to open.
- Download it. Open the Download tab and choose a format: MDF4, CSV, MATLAB, ASC, BLF or TRC.
See REXDESK: download and export your logs.
Fit the SIM and set up cloud upload
Skip this section if you only record to the internal storage.
- Open the SIM slot cap. The slot sits on the front face between the two antenna ports. Mishandling the cap can damage the logger and the SIM.
- Insert the SIM chip side down. Align the cut corner with the slot and slide the SIM straight in until it stops. Do not push it anywhere else, because it can fall inside the logger.
- Refit the cap. Close the SIM slot.
- Connect the antennas. The GNSS antenna goes on the blue FAKRA Code C port and the LTE antenna on the Bordeaux FAKRA Code D port. Keep both tight whenever the logger is powered.

The slot takes a standard SIM.
Then set up the upload with these guides, in order:
