REXGEN 2 quick start guide

Updated

Take REXGEN 2 or REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS from the box to its first log, in the order of the printed quick start card.

Before you start

  • The logger with its two integrated 9-way D-Sub leads.
  • The micro USB cable and the four mounting screws supplied.
  • A cable to the bus and to power, such as INF4103 (OBD-II to 9-way D-Sub) or INF4206 (multi power supply and CAN cable).
  • An external supply of +5 V to +27 V.
  • A Windows PC.
  • The bit rates of the buses you will record.

Get the software

  1. Download REXDESK. REXDESK is free. See Software downloads: installers, drivers and firmware.
  2. Run the installer. You may need administrator rights to install the drivers.
  3. Install the REXGEN USB driver. Search Windows for REXGEN Drivers and run it.

See REXDESK: install the software and the REXGEN USB driver.

Connectors and LEDs

REXGEN 2 has two 9-way D-Sub connectors on integrated leads. Connector A is male and connector B is female.

A dashed box is optional: INF4313, INF4311 and the GNSS antenna. The antenna fits REXGEN 2 IMU GNSS only: fit it before you power the logger.
  1. Switch off the supply. Connect the logger with the power off.
  2. Power the logger through connector A. Connect your OBD or power cable. Tighten the screws fully, so the connection stays reliable.
  3. Connect the CAN buses. CAN 0 is on connector A and CAN 1 on connector B. Match CAN-H to CAN-H and CAN-L to CAN-L on the vehicle or machine.
  4. Check the termination. Each end of every CAN or CAN FD bus needs a 120 Ω resistor across CAN-H and CAN-L. See CAN bus wiring: termination, cable length and grounding.
  5. Connect the inputs. The analogue inputs are on connector B and the digital inputs on connector A. Do not short any pins.
  6. Mount the logger. Fix it with the four screws supplied. Keep the enclosure fully fitted and sealed, so the logger keeps its IP rating.

Update the firmware

Update the firmware before your first recording. The update ends with a format, which erases every log on the logger.

  1. Select the firmware. With the logger connected over USB, select Device > Reflash in REXDESK. Select the firmware file.
  2. Wait for the LEDs to stop flashing. LED 1 and LED 2 flash alternately. The logger may disconnect from the PC, and reconnects to REXDESK when the update is complete.
  3. Format the internal storage. Open Internal Storage and select Format SD. This formats the logger's eMMC.
  4. Send a fresh configuration. Follow Record your first log below.

See REXGEN: update the firmware and set the clock.

Set the time

  1. Open the clock settings. Open REXDESK, connect the logger and select Set Time on the toolbar.
  2. Choose the time source. Select Synchronise with PC, or select Set Custom Date Time and enter a time.
  3. Save it. Select Set Time.

Record your first log

  1. Add a Log All block. In REXDESK, double-click the Log All icon, or drag it into the configuration window onto CAN 0. Add one to CAN 1 if you use it.
  2. Set each bus. Select the Bus icon. Choose CAN or CAN FD and the bit rate of the bus you are connected to.
  3. Send the configuration. Select Run on the toolbar and save the project.
  4. Confirm the upload. When REXDESK reports that the configuration uploaded, select OK. The LED of each configured channel blinks while it logs.

Open a log from internal storage

  1. Open the internal storage. Connect the logger and select Internal Storage on the toolbar.
  2. Choose the log. Select the file you want to open.
  3. Download it. Select Download and choose a format, for example MDF4, BLF or CSV.

See REXGEN: record a CAN trace and export it to BLF, ASC or MDF4.
