REXDESK: the window, menus and panels

Updated

Learn where everything sits in REXDESK, so the task guides that follow make sense at a glance.

The main window

Open REXDESK from its desktop icon or from the Start menu under Influx Technology. A new, empty project opens.

The REXDESK main window: menus and toolbar along the top, the Projects panel on the left, the Tools and Library panels beside it, the Configuration panel in the middle, an empty area on the right and the status bar along the bottom
The REXDESK window with a new project open and no logger connected.

From top to bottom and left to right, the window holds:

  • The menus and the toolbar
  • The Projects panel, which lists your projects and the logger
  • The Tools panel, which holds the building blocks of a configuration
  • The Library panel for DBC files, below the Tools panel
  • The Configuration panel, where you drop tools onto buses and set the logger options
  • An area on the right where windows such as Live Data, Internal Storage and Triggers open
  • The status bar

Each panel can be pinned or closed from its title bar. The Window menu saves or resets the layout.

Menus

File menu

The REXDESK File menu, open on Recent Files with three recent project files listed
The File menu, with the Recent Files list open.
New Project
Creates a new project.
Open Project
Opens a project saved on the PC.
Save Project
Saves the project as an XML File or a Project File.
Save Project As
Saves the project under a new name.
Import Recorded Data
Imports log files from the PC into the current project, so you can view and export them.
Recent Files
Lists recent project files. Clear empties the list.

Project menu

Shows or hides the Configuration, Library, Triggers and Project Manager windows.

Config menu

The REXDESK Config menu with Run, Export, Logger and View Summary
The Config menu holds everything that moves a configuration between REXDESK, a file and the logger.
Run
Run Config sends the configuration to the logger and starts it. Run Config Using External File sends a configuration you exported earlier as .xml or .rxc.
Export
Export Configuration to XML saves the configuration as XML. Export ReXgen Configuration(.rxc) saves it as an .rxc file, the format a logger can collect over the air.
Logger
Save Logger Configuration To file saves the configuration that is on the logger. Load Logger Configuration reads it into REXDESK.
View Summary
Opens a Configuration Summary of the current project. The summary shows what each bus records, the live data and the sleep and wake settings.

Device menu

The REXDESK Device menu with Live, Internal Storage, Set Device Time and Reflash
The Device menu is active only while a logger is connected.
Live
Opens the live data window. See REXDESK: record CAN, CAN FD and LIN.
Internal Storage
Lists the logs on the logger. See REXDESK: download and export your logs.
Set Device Time
Sets the logger's clock from the PC.
Reflash
Updates the logger firmware. Do not disconnect the logger until its LED stops flashing. The logger then reconnects to REXDESK by itself. Format the internal storage afterwards. See REXGEN: update the firmware and set the clock.

Tools menu

The REXDESK Tools menu with Encryption Manager, Cloud Settings and Settings
The Tools menu holds the settings that are not part of one project.
Encryption Manager
Manages encryption keys. Encryption is a licensed feature, available on request. See REXDESK: activate a licence and encrypt logs.
Cloud Settings
Mobile, Wi-Fi, FTP and cloud storage settings for loggers that upload. See these guides:
Settings
What REXDESK does when it starts and when a logger connects. See Settings below.

Window and Help

The Window menu saves and resets window layouts. The Help menu opens the help document installed with REXDESK.

Toolbar

The toolbar under the menus repeats the commands you use most. Buttons that need a logger stay grey until one is connected.

New Project, Open Project, Save, Save As
The same as in the File menu. Projects are saved as XML.
Run
Sends the configuration to the logger and starts logging.
Live
Opens the live data window.
Internal Storage
Lists the logs on the logger.
Set Time
Sets the logger's clock.
Configuration, Library, Triggers
Show the panel or window of that name.
Export Settings
Opens the export settings window, where you assign a DBC to each bus for decoded exports.
TCP/IP
Opens the ReXgen Connect window, which finds REXGEN Pro loggers on the network and connects to them. See REXGEN Pro: Wi-Fi, LTE and cloud upload.

Status bar

The bar along the bottom of the window describes the connected logger.

Interface
How the logger is connected, for example USB.
Logger status
Whether a logger is connected.
Firmware
The firmware on the connected logger.
Micro
The microcontroller in the logger.
Serial number
The serial number of the connected logger.
Configuration or project name
The name of the current configuration.
Cursor description
A description of the item under the mouse pointer.

Projects panel

The Projects panel showing a connected logger and a project folder holding test.xml
The Projects panel lists the logger and the project files in the open folder.
Import Project
Opens an existing project.
Edit in external application
Opens the project's XML or RPF file in another program.
Delete Project
Deletes the selected project.

Configuration panel

A configuration is built from tools. Drag a tool from the Tools panel and drop it on a bus or area in the Configuration panel. You can combine several tools in one configuration.

The Tools panel with CAN, LIN, Channels and Transmitting tool groups beside the Configuration panel with Logging slots CAN0 to CAN3, LIN and Channels, a Transmitting Output slot and the Device Configuration buttons
Tools on the left, the configuration you build on the right.
Tools and where they go
Group Tools Drop on Guide
CAN Log All, Errors, Filter, J1939, UDS CAN0 to CAN3 Record CAN, filters and UDS
LIN Log All, Schedule LIN Record LIN
Channels Analog, Dig In, Accel, Gyro, GNSS Channels Inputs, GNSS and IMU
Transmitting Periodic, HW Info, Snapshot Output Transmit, snapshot files

Use only the buses and channels your logger has. The specifications guide for your logger lists them.

The Device Configuration buttons below the configuration set what the logger does with the data:

  • Storage: log file length and size
  • Upload: FTP upload
  • Sleep
  • S3, shown as AWS in some builds
  • Encrypt
  • Live

Select the Bus icon on a bus to set its bit rate and options.

Library window

The Library panel holds the DBC files of the project. Import DBC adds a file and lists its messages and signals under Message/Signal. Delete DBC removes the selected file. The box and funnel beside them filter the list by signal name.

An imported DBC is saved inside the project file, so the project carries it to another PC.

Settings

The Settings dialog with On Logger Connect set to No Automation and On Startup set to Start with empty project
The Settings window, opened from Tools > Settings.
On Logger Connect
Auto import configuration when a logger connects reads the logger's configuration into REXDESK as soon as it connects. No Automation does nothing.
On Startup
Load last project, Load configuration from logger (If Connected) or Start with empty project.

Next: REXDESK: record CAN, CAN FD and LIN.
