REBEL CTGetting started

REBEL CT quick start guide

Updated

Connect REBEL CT to power, the CAN bus and your PC, install and activate DIALOG, then record and copy your first CAN log.

Before you start

In the box: REBEL CT (INF2105.01P), a USB cable, the INF4204.1 multi-connect cable, a preformatted 64 GB Extreme SDXC card, DIALOG Standard and Module Analyser Lite.

You also need:

  • A Windows 10 or 11 PC with internet access to activate the licence.
  • A cable to the vehicle, for example INF4103 (OBD type B plug to a 9-way D-sub).
  • A supply between 4.5 and 36 V DC.
  • The bit rate of the CAN bus you will record.

Get the software

DIALOG Standard ships with REBEL CT and is licensed per PC.

  1. Download DIALOG. If Influx Technology sent you an installer link with your licence, use that installer.
  2. Install it. Run Dialog.msi, select Yes when Windows asks to make changes, and follow the wizard.
  3. Activate the licence. Start DIALOG. In the Activation window, select Activate commercial license and follow the wizard with your licence file or ID.
  4. Install the REBEL USB driver. Keep the logger unplugged. Search Windows for Rebel Drivers and run it.

See DIALOG: install it and activate a licence.

Connectors and LEDs

The supplied INF4204.1 breaks the 25-way OBD and INST connector out to five leads.

The logger records to the SD card, which any PC can read; copy the recordings over USB or with a card reader.
  1. Fit the breakout cable. Plug the INF4204.1 into the 25-way OBD and INST connector.
  2. Connect the vehicle. Connect the CAN0/PWR lead to the vehicle, for example to the OBD port through an INF4103. It carries CAN 0 and the supply.
  3. Check the termination. Each end of the CAN bus needs a 120 Ω resistor across CAN high and CAN low. The logger has DIP switches inside for this. Where you cannot reach them, fit an external 120 Ω terminator.
  4. Connect USB. Connect the logger to the PC.

The leads are in REBEL breakout cables.

Update the firmware

Use the .frm firmware file Influx Technology supplies for your logger. See DIALOG: REBEL maintenance.

  1. Open Reflash. Select Logger and then Reflash. The window shows the Connected Rebel firmware version.
  2. Choose the file. Select Browse firmware, find the file and select Open.
  3. Reprogram. Select Reprogram and confirm with Yes.
  4. Wait. The logger is reflashed when the Reflashing in Progress screen disappears.

Set the time

  1. Open Set Time. Select Logger and then Set Time.
  2. Enter the date and time. In Rebel Time, set Date and Time for your time zone, then select OK.

Record your first log

  1. Create a project. Select Project, then New Project, enter a name and select OK.
  2. Start a configuration. Select the project, then Configuration and New Configuration, and enter a Configuration Name.
  3. Choose the sleep mode. On the Sleep Mode tab, choose what wakes the logger and set Sleep Delay (min). Clear Limit Module Wakeup and select OK.
  4. Add the bus. Select New Bus, then CAN 0 (HS). Choose the network's Bus Speed, for example 500 kbit/s.
  5. Log every frame. Select New Protocol, then CAN Monitor, and tick Log All Channels.
  6. Send it. With the SD card in the logger, right-click the configuration, select Send Configuration to the Logger and then Yes.
  7. Check the LEDs. On the bus, F2 lights when the configuration is ready, F5 shows CAN 0 traffic and Status flashes while logging. If F5 flickers, check the bus speed.

Watch, copy and open the log

To watch data live, select the Live Data tab in the Logger window, tick the items and select Start logging. Recordings are IVD files, one folder per configuration.

  1. Open REBEL Explorer. Select the Rebel Explorer tab in the Logger window.
  2. Get the file. Under SD Folders, right-click the IVD file, choose Get File(s) and save it. Select Yes to import it.
  3. Export it. In the Analysis window, double-click the file, tick the items, select the export button and pick a format such as ASAM MDF, CSV or BLF.

A PC card reader also works, but never format the card in Windows. See DIALOG: view live data, copy recordings and export them.

CAN FD, LIN, inputs and modules

  • CAN FD and LIN. The CAN2/LIN0 and CAN3/LIN1 leads carry CAN 2 and CAN 3 (CAN FD in ISO or non-ISO frames, or CAN 2.0) and LIN 0 and LIN 1. On a CAN FD bus, also set CAN FD Speed.
  • Inputs. Wire them to the Dig/An lead or an INF4213 screw terminal: see recording inputs in DIALOG.
  • K-Series modules. Plug the module into the AUX/CAN1 lead and tick Aux Power On on the configuration's Settings tab: see K-Series: logging with REBEL and DIALOG.
