K-Series instrumentation

Thermocouple, analogue and digital modules for any CAN logger.

K-Series modules put thermocouples, voltages, currents, PWM and digital signals on the CAN bus, time synchronised with the vehicle network data. Pair them with a REXGEN or REBEL logger, or any CAN logger that reads a DBC file. K-TC also logs on its own.

How to choose

Three modules, one bus

Every K-Series module transmits standard CAN and ships with a DBC file, so any logger decodes it. Choose by what you need to measure.

K-TC, thermocouple to CAN module

8, 16 or 32 K, J or T thermocouple channels per module, ±1 °C from -200 °C to +1200 °C with 0.001 °C resolution and cold junction compensation, 20 Hz per channel. K-TC logs to its own 8 GB eMMC for months and transmits on CAN at the same time, so it works with a logger or without one.

View K-TC

K-BOX, multi-DAQ module

Eight K, J or T thermocouple inputs at 10 Hz, ±1 °C from -200 °C to +1250 °C, beside eight 16-bit analogue inputs at 1 kHz on all eight, 2 kHz on four or 10 kHz on two, ±0.0015 % of full scale on software switchable ±80 V to ±10 V ranges. Current via a clamp or shunt, four digital channels, and regulated 5 V and 24 V to power the sensors.

View K-BOX

K-AN8, analogue and digital to CAN module

Eight 16-bit bipolar differential inputs at 1 kHz on all eight, 2 kHz on four or 10 kHz on two, ±0.0015 % of full scale, ±80 V to ±10 V switchable. Three frequency, counter or pulse inputs to 100 kHz, and four open collector outputs rated 45 V and 10 mA that switch relays and indicators, with their states logged on CAN.

Your logger

REXGEN, REBEL or any third-party logger that reads a DBC file. Measurements land on CAN time synchronised with the vehicle network data, so a REXGEN 2 or REBEL CT records sensor channels alongside the bus traffic on the same timebase. New to the bus? Start with CAN bus explained.

K-CAL setup

K-CAL is free and runs on Windows. It configures up to five devices at once, with a built-in oscilloscope and calibration with traceable certification. K-BOX and K-AN8 are configured over CAN through an Influx Technology logger or a CAN to USB interface such as a Kvaser Leaf. K-TC is also configured over USB.

DBC export

A DBC file ships with every module. K-CAL exports per-device and combined multi-device DBC files for REXDESK, DIALOG or any tool that imports DBC. Read Understanding CAN DBC files before you start, and check bus load once modules add periodic traffic to the network.

Practical notes

Thermocouples are sold separately. The modules take standard miniature K, J and T connectors, so existing probes work. A bench kit pairs K-TC with a Kvaser Leaf interface and T-CANnector for desk setup. Calibration and certification are available on demand through K-CAL.

Common questions

K-Series questions, answered

Do K-Series modules work with third-party CAN loggers?

Yes. Every module transmits standard CAN and ships with a DBC file, so REXGEN, REBEL or any other logger or analysis tool decodes it. Measurements land on CAN time synchronised with the vehicle network data, so the logger records sensor channels and bus traffic on the same timebase. K-CAL exports the DBC file with your channel names, and a combined file when several modules share the bus, for import into REXDESK, DIALOG or a third-party tool.

Can I use a module without a data logger?

K-TC can. It records to its internal 8 GB eMMC, enough for months of standalone data, and CAN transmission runs at the same time. K-BOX and K-AN8 measure and transmit only, so pair them with a CAN logger. That makes K-TC the choice for unattended endurance runs and for rigs with no logger fitted. For analogue or digital channels, a REXGEN or REBEL logger on the same bus records everything the modules transmit.

How do I configure the modules?

In K-CAL, the free Windows software for the whole K-Series. K-BOX and K-AN8 are configured over the CAN bus through an Influx Technology logger or a CAN to USB interface such as a Kvaser Leaf. K-TC is also configured over USB. K-CAL handles up to five devices at once, includes a built-in oscilloscope for checking signals live, and offers calibration with traceable certification. Once the channels are named, export the DBC file for your logger software.

How many channels can I have?

K-TC comes in 8, 16 or 32 channel versions. All three modules are stackable and daisy chainable, so more modules add more channels on the same bus, and K-CAL exports a combined DBC file for the whole stack. K-BOX carries eight thermocouple and eight analogue inputs, K-AN8 eight analogue inputs with three pulse inputs and four outputs. Stack the modules that match the sensors on the rig. K-CAL configures up to five at once.

Which thermocouple types are supported?

Types K, J and T, with cold junction compensation. K-TC spans -200 °C to +1200 °C and K-BOX -200 °C to +1250 °C, both at ±1 °C. Thermocouples are not included. The modules accept standard miniature connectors so existing probes work. K-TC resolves to 0.001 °C at 20 Hz per channel, and K-BOX samples its thermocouple inputs at 10 Hz. Each channel is assigned its thermocouple type and name in K-CAL before the DBC file is exported.

What is the difference between K-BOX and K-AN8?

K-AN8 is the analogue and digital module. K-BOX adds eight thermocouple inputs on top of the same analogue front end. If you need temperatures in the same box, choose K-BOX. If you need outputs to switch relays and indicators, choose K-AN8. Both carry eight 16-bit analogue inputs at 1 kHz on all eight, 2 kHz on four or 10 kHz on two, and both supply regulated 5 V and 24 V for sensors. K-AN8 also takes three frequency, counter or pulse inputs to 100 kHz.

Can the modules measure current?

Yes, on the K-BOX and K-AN8 analogue inputs via a current clamp or shunt, within the ±80 V to ±10 V switchable ranges. A clamp outputs a voltage proportional to the current and a shunt drops a small voltage across a known resistance, so either lands on one of the eight 16-bit differential inputs. An active clamp can draw its supply from the module's regulated 5 V or 24 V outputs, up to 80 mA combined.

Can they power my sensors?

K-BOX and K-AN8 provide regulated 5 V and 24 V outputs, up to 80 mA combined, for external sensors. That covers pressure transducers, position sensors and active current clamps without a separate supply on the rig. K-TC needs no sensor supply, since thermocouples generate their own signal. Keep the combined draw under 80 mA. Above that, power the sensors from the vehicle or a bench supply and bring the signal back to the module.

Do I get a DBC file?

Yes. A DBC file is supplied with every module, and K-CAL generates DBC files with custom channel names, including a combined file for multi-device setups, for import into REXDESK or DIALOG. Any third-party logger or analysis tool that reads DBC decodes the same messages. If DBC files are new to you, the Learn article on understanding CAN DBC files walks through what the file contains and how a logger uses it to turn raw frames into named signals.

Can I get calibration certificates?

Yes. Professional calibration and certification are available on demand through K-CAL. K-CAL carries the calibration workflow for K-TC, K-BOX and K-AN8, and traceable certification can be issued with it. Request it when you order, or speak to an engineer about a module already in service. The same software handles the day-to-day setup, so calibration and configuration live in one place, with the built-in oscilloscope to check the result.
